TIDY TIPS: Who remembers stretching out sentences to hit a word count to make our teachers happy? ?? But in the real world, keeping things tidy and easy to read is the power move. ?? Try these word swaps to tighten up your writing and strengthen your message: ?? Instead of "in order to," say "to." ?? Ditch "in a timely manner" and use "promptly." ?? The New Yorker recently updated its style guidelines, changing "in-box" to "inbox," "Web site" to "website," and "Internet" to "internet." But they retained archaic-isms like "teen-ager" and "per cent," as well as the use of the diaresis.
