Our now-iconic footwear started when the first air-cushioned sole technology was designed by two German inventors: medical doctor, Dr. Klaus Maertens and engineer Herbert Funck. But while our sole technology may be German, our soul is undeniably British. British shoe-makers, R Griggs and Co, bought the rights to that air-cushioned sole technology. R Griggs & Co anglicised the name to “Dr. Martens”, designed an outsole and boot for British workers and the 1460 boot was born. Dr. Martens footwear was designed to look new with its modern air-cushion comfort so R Griggs & Co added the iconic yellow stitch, the grooves, the two tone side sole and the black and yellow heel loop. These new boots were sold to workmen. But fate intervened. Dr. Martens may have been made for industry but, as it turns out, they were destined for the stage. Subverted early on by subcultures, they paved the way for a new kind of rebellious self-expression. From the punks of 70s London to the grungers of 90s Seattle, Dr. Martens boots have always stood with those who dare to be different. Subcultures may fade out and evolve but our alternative spirit is a constant. And as for what the future holds? We have offices in London, Northampton, Paris, Düsseldorf, Portland, across Asia and an ever-expanding global retail portfolio. We have the respect of big-name fashion giants – think Supreme and Yohji Yamamoto – enabling us to engage in exciting partnerships season after season. We want to mean something to everyone who laces up our boots: from the first-timers to the Docs boots veterans. Do you have what it takes to help us? Dr. Martens x MM6. So unbelievably gassed to be sharing our most recent collab creative. A shoe within a shoe - a physical collision of iconic products and iconic brands, inspired by archival MM6 collages. It’s not often you get to work on a project that demands a full day of hands-on mixed-media creation – ripping, scanning, taping, and crafting. The process was just as exciting as the final assets, and I couldn’t be prouder of what we have created. Dr. Martens x MM6 Maison Margiela Revealed in Milan earlier this year, and finally hitting the shelves this week, the project celebrates our icons but revisits our distinctive design DNA through the lens of the legendary fashion house (specifically, the brilliant mind of Heikki Salonen). The result is a real triumph, and represents months of hard work. Another smash hit from an incredible team, from product all the way through to creative and everything in between.

This October, we proudly celebrated Black History Month across our EMEA region, honouring the rich heritage and contributions of the Black community. Our celebration featured a bumper selection of activities, including inspiring stories from artists, designers, archive directors, and retail managers. A huge thank you to everyone who participated and made this month memorable! Darren Leon Mckoy hosted a panel with creatives, Foday Dumbuya (Founder and Creative Director of Labrum London) and TRAICELINE PRATT an emerging designer whose 1460 Boot design won the Dr. Martens x Central Saint Martins, University of The Arts London competition. They shared what led them to pursue a career in fashion and the influences on their design and work. We were honoured to have the Black Cultural Archives, a DM Foundation Partner, visit Camden. The amazing The Flygerians Nigerian street food- Corporate caterers provided lunch while Lisa Anderson shared BCA’s incredible work and archival treasures. If you haven’t yet, make sure to visit BCA in Brixton! Three of our incredible retail store managers, Camille Stewart; Gary JEREMIE and Joyce Mukasa joined our Chief Brand Officer Ije Nwokorie, to discuss their career journeys and experiences at DMs. Leading the way in retail, they shared their learnings and best practice on inclusive leadership. To wrap up the celebrations we had a party at our Camden offices, opening with spoken word artist and two-time Glasto performer, Mstr Samuel. PTPLays kept our wellbeing in check with sessions on rebellious self-expression and authenticity. DJing the night was Damali Tyson aka CHAos w/Dams, and huge thanks to All Roads for bringing their signature African American soul food and Simon Santhanam and the team from ArtPlay London for bringing this collaborative experience to us.
