DP Energy attended the Irish Renewable Gas Conference this month, where industry leaders came together to discuss the future of sustainable energy in Ireland The Irish energy sector is undergoing a transition to a low carbon future. By gradually replacing natural gas with biomethane, we can work towards delivering a net-zero carbon gas network by 2045 and reduce emissions across a number of key sectors, including those traditionally difficult to decarbonise. Irish firm DP Energy Group has sold its interest in what will become the largest urban solar park project in North America to the city of Medicine Hat, in Alberta, Canada

DP Energy has finalised the sale of Saamis Solar Park to the City of Medicine Hat in Alberta, Canada. ?? ? DP Energy secured the development rights to the site in 2017, then proceeded to obtain a Development Permit in 2021 and ultimately the necessary approval from the AUC in 2024 to construct and operate the project. ? With the transfer of the approval, the City of Medicine Hat has acquired a ‘ready-to-build’ solar project with all necessary planning and environmental approvals in place. ? Situated in the northwest of Canada’s sunniest city, when fully built, Saamis Solar Park is expected to generate enough electricity to supply the equivalent of approximately 100,000 households and offset around 350,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually. ? Last week, DP Energy’s Project Manager, Lee Watt, provided consultancy and judging support to five teams of students as part of the Net Zero Skills Competition held in Pembrokeshire College. The teams were tasked with developing a comprehensive strategy to reduce the carbon footprint and achieve net zero emissions in either their school, community, or region. As Lee noted, "It was great to see the variety of ideas... and encouraging to see students thinking more widely about sustainability." Funded by the Welsh Government and ran by a dedicated network of colleges, work-based learning providers and employer-led organisations, Skills Competition Wales equips students with essential skills for the future. One initiative we are proud to support is Techspoloration, which has successfully delivered empowering educational content to young women and gender-diverse youth from Grades 9 through 12 through hands-on, mentor-led programming and an impactful online video series. In case you missed it – DP Energy has been granted EPBC approval for Callide Wind Farm, a renewable energy project with a capacity of 430MW, located in the Calliope Range in Queensland, Australia. The wind farm will consist of 70 wind turbine generators and construction is expected to commence this year. This week, our UK team took local action to help the nature emergency by supporting Pembrokeshire County Council’s Green Infrastructure Officer Peter Howe and his team of contractors in planting a small area and shelter belt of native broadleaf trees. ? DP Energy is focused on delivering renewable energy solutions and is committed to sustainable, environmentally responsible methods in all our project developments, minimising the impact on other species.? ? When asked to get involved, the team jumped at the chance to volunteer and help Peter with his project which is within walking distance of DP Energy’s UK office in Pembroke Dock. ? The planting at the Bridge Innovation Centre will protect an orchard of native Welsh apple and pear trees and is part of a bigger site-wide scheme. The funding for this local project was provided through the Welsh Government ‘Local Places for Nature’ programme. ? The trees and orchard will take a few years to mature, but during their lifetime, they will not only help to stabilise and feed the soil and its own ecosystem, but also provide a habitat for many species of flora and fauna including lichens, mosses, fungi, common invertebrates, birds, bats and other small mammals. ? The area will provide a habitat for humans too and hopefully, in a few years, we can taste the fruits of our labour. The team will be keeping a close eye on progress! ? It was only a small effort to help nature and only a small number of volunteering hours out of our day, but, as we know, small things can make a big difference. ? There are many excellent local and national climate and nature initiatives, please do get involved if you can. ?
