Work to implement the Downtown San Diego Partnership's 5-Point Safety Plan that advocates for a cleaner and safer Downtown continues. We recently hosted another working meeting this time with leaders from the County of San Diego. Downtown businesses and residents joined Sheriff Kelly Martinez, District Attorney summer stephan, Director of the County of San Diego's Behavioral Health Services Luke Bergmann, and a representative from Supervisor Nora E Vargas's office to talk about the County's role in reducing crime and improving public safety and cleanliness in Downtown. We talked about next steps to put our safety plan in action including the implementation of CARE Court, State Senate Bill 43, Prop 36 and Prop 1 funding in Downtown. We know resolving the challenges to the current experience of Downtown residents, employees, and visitors will take the collective alignment of all levels of government. Thank you to our coalition member representatives including Kerri Kapich from San Diego Tourism Authority, Justine Nielsen from San Diego Regional Chamber, and DSDP Board representation including Chair Phil Rath, DSDP Public Policy & Planning Chair Kenneth Moore and many others for joining us.

A new way to explore Downtown is here! Today, we celebrated the ribbon cutting of Downtown’s first IKE Smart City digital kiosk alongside Todd Gloria, Stephen Whitburn, and Christina Bibler from The City of San Diego, our COO Justin Apger, and Jessica Burton. This new wayfinding technology is designed to enhance the pedestrian experience, offering a full suite of applications and integrated features to help visitors and residents navigate and discover all that our vibrant city has to offer. With multilingual support, they provide detailed information on nearby restaurants, shops, businesses, cultural institutions, events, city information, and more resources. A big shoutout to our Clean & Safe team and our dedicated Safety Ambassador, Eduardo! This past month, we were informed about a missing individual from the Hard Rock Hotel. Eduardo immediately stepped in, working with the family to gather important details. Thanks to his quick thinking, our dispatcher swiftly alerted all team members to be on the lookout. Not long after, Eduardo located the individual near the Omni Hotel, ensuring a safe and happy reunion. Thank you, Eduardo, and the entire Clean & Safe team for your outstanding teamwork and dedication to community safety!

Great downtowns across the world serve a critical role in their local economies. Downtowns are also incredibly resilient – navigating seismic-feeling shifts in the role and purpose of these urban centers. This is especially true in traditional financial districts like our City Center neighborhood. To navigate these shifts, it takes strong and continued commitment of civic leaders, the dedication of resources, and a shared belief in the resiliency of downtowns.? We were proud to once again host Assemblymember Matt Haney, who serves as the Chair of the Assembly’s Select Committee on Downtown Recovery. This was the second time this year that the Assemblymember was able to visit Downtown San Diego and to learn about not only the challenges our community faces, but the incredible strides we are making to transform Downtown into the urban core that our residence, workforce, and visitors expect.? Our Vice President of Policy and Civic Engagement, Josh Callery-Coyne, Senior Director of Economic Development, Nathan Bishop, AICP, and Director of Business Engagement and City Center BID Director, Joel Hermosillo, shared their expertise. Thank you to Mayor Todd Gloria’s office for joining us for the tour. We were also excited to have Brian Schoenfisch with the City of San Diego’s Urban Division, and Justine Murray, with the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce. Thank you to other Downtown stakeholders like San Diego Symphony and Resident Brewing Co for opening your doors and having honest conversations about challenges and opportunities. Together we are building the future of our urban core!?

Your contributions make a meaningful impact every day, and this gathering served as a reminder of the strong sense of community and support we share. Here’s to a season of gratitude—and to our amazing team!
