This one might ruffle a few feathers, but I stand behind it. Yes, ring lights do have their place and are especially useful in close-up beauty work. However, it is not a catch all solution to every lighting situation. Ring lights create a very different catch-light in the eyes that doesn’t suit every story, and some people even find it unsettling. Cheap ring lights can cause banding or flickering issues when working with video. And in the case of photography, working with products that have reflective surfaces, highlights are often produced with strange arches of dots, created by the individual LEDs—which are nearly impossible to fix in photoshop. The ring light is a handy tool in the lighting toolbox, but keep in mind it’s just one of many and it is intended for very specific look.

Ad Critique: Packing an ad full of content can be counter intuitive. For many folks there is a fear that if an ad doesn't explain every feature a product has, a reader might not see the one piece of info that would have convinced them to make a purchase. This strategy tends be overwhelming and invites readers to skip the ad entirely, when an ad with just one or two clear and concise messages might have been more inviting. It's been my experience that most customers aren't convinced to buy from seeing a single ad. It may take dozens of views over time for a prospective customer to build awareness of and interest in a product or brand. That customer is less likely to move down to the next part of your sales funnel if they aren't engaging with it at the top. Would you rather have 75% of readers receive one message or have 75% of readers skip ten messages?

Ad Critique: Clean ads don't need to be boring. We often associate clean design with brands such as apple that are minimal and void of anything but the most essential design elements. However, it is possible to make clean ads with a little more unique character than the classic stark white backgrounds.
