  • From March 4-6, 2024, the Society of American Foresters (SAF) with support from the USDA Forest Service hosted the Mature and Old Growth Science Summit: Climate-Informed Forestry to Foster Resilient Ecosystems. The purpose of the Summit was to present and discuss the state of the science around mature and old-growth forest conservation, an effort catalyzed by the Federal government’s Mature and Old Growth (MOG) Initiative stemming from Executive Order (EO) 14072. Incorporating other directives from EO 14072, the Summit explored several other key themes: climate-informed forestry, Indigenous Knowledge and Tribal co-stewardship, and National Forest System planning and partnerships. Wildfire Risk Mitigation Events in Northern Minnesota September and October were busy months with Gloria Erickson and Teresa Floberg of Dovetail Partners coordinating multiple wildfire risk mitigation events. In September, the multiple curbside haulaway and drop off disposal events were a tremendous success. As a match to these grant funded events, private landowners contributed 2,145 hours of their time to help their properties be more wildfire resilient. This resulted in the removal of 1,540 cubic yards of hazardous woody debris. This is an increase from similar past events. In October, 30 participants attended a Pile Burning Workshop. Information was shared by the Forest Service, MN DNR, The Nature Conservancy, and Pheasants Forever on techniques for pile burning, the role fire plays in our forest, and equipment used when working with fire. #wildfireriskmitigation #northernminnesota

  • Check out the final report from the EUDR series titled, "How Voluntary Certification Systems Support the Forest and Wood Products Industry with EUDR Compliance." As introduced in prior Dovetail articles, the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) (Regulation (EU) 2023/1115) requires operators to exercise and demonstrate due diligence in avoiding deforestation, forest degradation, and illegal processing of seven commodities. The Regulation requires detailed data collection, traceability through the supply chain, risk assessment, risk mitigation, and reporting. The forest products industry has decades of experience with these activities through voluntary participation in certification programs, including the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), Sustainable Biomass Program (SBP), and Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI). This report outlines the requirements of EUDR, their intersect with certification, and how these four certification programs have adapted their systems to support certificate holders in demonstrating compliance with the EUDR.
