DOVE has the Safe Pet Program! Last year alone, DOVE served 37 clients who had pets. Because we want you, and your furry friends safe, we partner with local organizations like PAWS so all of you are able to escape the abuse. Pet abuse is a disturbing form of cruelty that involves the mistreatment, neglect, or intentional harm of animals. This can range from physical violence, such as hitting or kicking, to neglectful behaviors like depriving a pet of food, water, or proper shelter. Additionally, pet abuse is often an indicator of deeper psychological or behavioral issues within the abuser. Studies have shown that people who abuse animals are more likely to commit violent acts against humans, highlighting the need for early intervention when animal cruelty is detected. This next week we are discussing emotional abuse. ****Trigger Warning**** Emotional abuse is a form of manipulation and control that often goes unnoticed because it does not leave physical marks. It involves behaviors such as constant criticism, humiliation, threats, isolation, and intimidation, all of which are aimed at eroding the victim's self-esteem and sense of worth. Unlike physical abuse, emotional abuse is more insidious and can take many subtle forms, making it harder for victims to recognize. Over time, emotional abuse can have profound psychological effects, leading to anxiety, depression, and a sense of helplessness. The abuser often creates an environment of fear and dependency, making the victim feel isolated and unable to seek help.
