Steelhead fishing is heating up! Unfortunately, we have seen cases of fish fever where people forget about boating safely around our project. As a dam safety and security reminder boats are to stay 100 feet away from the debris boom above Wells and 1,000 feet from the downstream side of the dam.

October 14, 2024 at 4:14 AM 850 customers lost power in the Rock Island area due to a transformer failure at Douglas PUD Hanna substation. Initial information suggests an underground fault was not detected and cleared by the protective equipment. Normally, protective equipment is designed to open the line, or disconnect the load, when a fault is detected to protect the substation transformer. This undetected fault, which overloaded the transformer for around two minutes, caused the transformer to fail. By 6:15 AM, crews had transferred the load to other substations and service was restored to all customers. A substation transformer, like the one at Hanna, is an expensive asset. The lead time to purchase a replacement transformer is around 2 years. In the meantime, Douglas PUD will investigate the root cause and determine next steps.
