On Wednesday, we gathered to celebrated the retirement of our founder and COO, William Doucet, PS. After 30+ years of working relentlessly to build one of the preeminent Land Surveying firms in the region, Bill will now be taking time to enjoy some of his other passions, including kayaking, photography, and woodworking. We all want to thank Bill for his dedication, professionalism, and mentorship over the years. All of us at Doucet Survey owe you a debt of gratitude for what you have done to help develop our careers and promote the profession. Thank you Bill, and best of luck in retirement!

Steve Michaud recently volunteered for an open position on the NH Board of Land Surveyors. Upon submittal of his application, the process required a nomination from the Governor as well as an approval of the appointment by the Executive Council. As of last Council meeting, both of those have occurred. Steve looks forward to the opportunity to serve the profession of Land Surveying in this new role!

Happy President's Day! Did you know that three of the men in this image practiced Land Surveying at some point in their careers? A young George Washington?began a career as a land surveyor in 1749?after accompanying a surveying trip to the western frontier. By 1752, Washington had completed nearly two hundred surveys. His success as a land speculator grew out of his early career as a surveyor. Abraham Lincoln's career as a surveyor began in 1833 when John Calhoun, Sangamon County Surveyor (Illinois), offered Lincoln a job as his assistant. His projects included government surveys, road surveys, town lots, and private surveys. Thomas Jefferson followed in his father’s footsteps in Land Surveying when he received a commission as surveyor of Albemarle County.?Surveying for the younger Jefferson was primarily a tool for imposing order on his farms. Dozens of plats survive today from projects he undertook to rationalize and describe his lands in Bedford and Albemarle counties.

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of presenting at the ASCE-NH annual ski day. The topic was "Surveyors as expert measurers, and the modern tools we're utilizing". It was the first time I've ever given a presentation while wearing ski boots, and I think it went pretty well! Of course, the best part was being able to spend the day on the slopes with some coworkers and colleagues. A big "thank-you" to Jay Hodkinson, P.E. for organizing another successful event!

A new service that Doucet Survey is providing is automated deformation monitoring. Basically, measuring movement (or lack thereof) in buildings, bridges, tunnels, etc., typically during construction. While we've done lots of monitoring projects in the past, it's always been done with a traditional field crew using either a total station or level, and requires multiple visits to the site, sometimes over the course of months or even years. The new method employs the use of sophisticated tilt sensors, semi-permanently mounted total stations, WiFi/cellular communication, and software that helps us analyze the data. After the initial setup of the equipment, the data can be monitored remotely and easily disseminated to our clients. This photo shows the equipment in action, and you'll see the total station mounted in a protective cage.
