  • The PRC’s presence in Panama’s ports reflects its broader influence in the country. Panama now ranks 12th in the latest China Index, with the PRC exerting significant influence in the economy, technology, media, and academia. ???? China’s Grip on Panama’s Ports ???? China now controls two of the five major ports near the Panama Canal: ?? Balboa (Pacific Ocean) – Operated by a Hong Kong-based subsidiary of China’s Hutchison Ports. ?? Cristóbal (Caribbean Sea) – Also under Hutchison Ports’ control, giving China access to both entry and exit points of the canal. By securing these key locations, ???? #China enhances its global shipping dominance while positioning itself for potential leverage over one of the world’s most crucial maritime chokepoints. ?? Why Does This Matter? The Panama Canal handles about 5% of global trade, and any disruptions—whether due to conflict, economic pressure, or diplomatic maneuvering—could send shockwaves through global supply chains. If tensions between ???? the U.S. and ???? China escalate, control over these ports could become a major geopolitical flashpoint. ?? Beyond #Panama: #China’s Expansion in #SouthAmerica?? Panama is just one piece of a larger puzzle. ???? China has invested heavily in Latin American infrastructure, including: ???? Argentina – Control over deep-water ports and military-linked space facilities. ???? Brazil – Major stakes in ports, energy, and agriculture. ???? Peru Control over deep-water ports ???? Ecuador & ???? Peru – Key mining and logistics hubs. ???? Chile – Expanding influence in lithium and trade routes. This deep economic integration makes ???? China an unavoidable power in Latin America, raising questions about the region’s long-term geopolitical alignment. ? A Battle for the Ports? With China entrenched in Panama, ???? the U.S. faces a dilemma: 1?? Ignore the situation and risk losing strategic control over a waterway critical to global trade. 2?? Challenge China’s influence through economic, diplomatic, or military means—escalating tensions in the Western Hemisphere. Would ???? Washington allow ???? Beijing to control a gateway between the Atlantic and Pacific without resistance? History suggests otherwise. Who’s right and who’s wrong? That depends on perspective. But one thing is clear: ???? Panama is no longer just a canal—it’s a frontline in the great power struggle of the 21st century. #MaritimeSecurity ? #Geopolitics ?? #China ???? #PanamaCanal ???? #Via Joshua Hutchinson

?? What happens in Hong Kong doesn’t stay in Hong Kong. ?? At the China in the World conference hosted by Doublethink Lab in Johannesburg, South Africa last month, I shared insights from my research on Hong Kong’s digital transformation—a cautionary tale for global internet freedom. Since 2020, Hong Kong has become a testing ground for China’s digital authoritarian playbook, with new laws, subtle censorship strategies, and corporate complicity reshaping its digital landscape. These developments have far-reaching implications for policymakers, businesses, and civil society worldwide. ?? Key insights from my talk: 1?? Regulatory Shifts: Hong Kong’s laws increasingly align with mainland China’s policies, setting a dangerous precedent for others to follow. 2?? Content Censorship: Targeted restrictions, enforced via ISPs, create an effective but less visible control mechanism. 3?? Corporate Complicity: ICT companies play a pivotal role in data sharing and content moderation—sometimes to the detriment of digital rights. 4?? Self-Censorship: Vague laws and high compliance costs lead to over-compliance, chilling free expression far beyond legal mandates. 5?? Global Risks: The erosion of digital rights in Hong Kong provides authoritarian regimes worldwide with a model to emulate. ?? Current Developments to Watch: ? Hong Kong's Critical Infrastructure Bill—potentially introducing further restrictions. ? The UN General Assembly's upcoming vote on the cybercrime convention, which could redefine global internet governance. ?? Why this matters: Hong Kong’s story is not just local—it’s a global warning. Its experience highlights the intersection of governance, technology, and human rights, offering lessons for safeguarding internet freedom and privacy worldwide. ?? New report from the Counter disinformation Network "Sanctioned but Thriving" by Alliance4Europe and Science Feedback details how sanctioned Russian and Belarusian media circumvent EU sanctions. I contributed to this project but mapping out the Pravda network, finding 61 websites. " This research builds on five reports published in the summer of 2024, highlighting the prevalence of sanctioned actors and media across platforms such as Meta, Google, TikTok, Telegram, and X. These reports were shared at the time with the relevant platforms. The report, titled, 'Sanctioned but Thriving: How Online Platforms Fail to Address the Widespread Presence of Entities Under EU Sanctions,' found that 83 percent of the sanctioned accounts identified can still be accessed by EU users on the aforementioned platforms, excluding TikTok, which acted on all flags" https://lnkd.in/dwxCDyd3
