"Reject. Not a good culture fit." My recruiting teams used to receive this message a lot. When I would ask the client to elaborate, so we could source the right fit, there was often either no answer or something superficial like, "I didn’t like her tattoos... He didn’t seem eager enough..." A quick point about "culture fit" because it’s a slippery slope: ?? Know and define exactly what you mean by it. Do you want people who look, act, and think like you so you can maintain a comfy echo chamber? Or, do you want people who align with your core values, but can bring diversity of thought to help enrich your teams and innovate your approaches? In my last leadership role, I was brought in to lead a recruiting team that was already in place. As expected, many of them were skeptical and uncomfortable with the changes I was making to fix immediate problems I saw. I asked each of them, how would you do it differently, what would you recommend, what other solutions do you see? My definition of "culture fit" was people who wanted to develop and drive solutions. When I added to the team, there was an interview question to evaluate that specifically. Asking these questions, I immediately saw: ?? Who had good ideas to elevate our game. Better than mine? Great, how would do that? Go for it! ?? Who optimistically rolled with the changes because they didn't have a better idea. ?? Who just complained. Complained about the problems, complained about the solutions, had no other solutions to offer, and resented being asked for solutions because that wasn't their job. The first group elevated our success. The middle group happily followed the process and provided stable high performance. And, the last group, poison to the team, were performance managed, and/or let go. Many of them surprised me based on first "vibes." Some leaders prefer the first group and some prefer the second. Some employees are the first group and some are the second. Skills are important. An incredible evening in support of Build California at the Build A Legacy dinner with over 40 industry owners and exec leaders discussing the work and vision Erin Volk and the AGC of California WFD team have for the program. Some key awards handed out to 3 companies for their outstanding contribution's and efforts for Build California and the CEF Board Procore Technologies, Clinton Myers of Myers & Sons Construction and Marina Landscape. Together your contributions have had instrumental change and impact on not only the program but so many lives, as we saw in the slide show. Following my rambling of a speech, and Double Jack Industries pledge, we had hands fly up from all over the room with matching or LARGER contributions totaling over $120,000 for the evening.
