Today, queer folks in South Dakota still feel the need to hide who they are. Politics, misguided views, and a lack of information contribute to that feeling. With your help, we can change that. Dorothy’s List aims to bring informed accountability to corporate advocacy partnerships that create better futures for LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit South Dakotans. Dorothy’s List is where you find businesses and organizations with a track record of being LGBTQ+ friendly. Friends of Dorothy’s back up their support with policies and action. They offer more than just symbols of support, they act on it — not just during Pride month. Friends of Dorothy have been nominated by community members, sought recognition themselves, or were pulled from a previously aggregated list. The name comes from the mid-twentieth-century phrase, “friend of Dorothy.” Queer people of the time would use it as a coded language to protect themselves. In practice, a man who is attracted to another but isn’t sure if the feeling is mutual, would ask, “Are you a friend of Dorothy?” to test the water. If the response is a puzzled “Dorothy who?” he’ll know it’s wise to move on. But if the response is “Oh, yes, I’m a very good friend of Dorothy,” he’ll know it’s safe to proceed. Dorothy is, of course, in reference to Judy Garland’s character in The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy Gale. Judy was hailed as a fierce ally to the queer community.

For companies planning their 2024 #Pride programming, here are some recommendations: 1. ?????????????? ?????? ???????????????????? ??????????+ ?????????? ?????????????? ? Ensure that your LGBTQ+ employees are actively involved in the planning process.? ? If you don't have an LGBTQ+ staff member willing to participate, consider a consultant.? ? It's crucial to include and prioritize our voices on your committees to ensure your programming meets the needs, perspectives, and experiences of those most impacted. 2. ?????????????????? ??????????+ ???????????? ? Make sure to include LGBTQ+ folks who identify as transgender, non-binary, people of color, disabled, immigrants, and other marginalized identities. ? Cisgender, able-bodied, gay white men cannot and should not represent the diverse LGBTQ+ community; you risk causing harm, otherwise. 3. ?????? ??????????+ ???????????????? ? When organizing company-wide conversations with external LGBTQ+ speakers, ensure they are compensated for their work. ? It is unethical to expect LGBTQ+ individuals to take on the emotional labor of educating others about our experiences, the respect we deserve, and how our full humanity can be honored without compensation. 4. ???????????? #?????????? ?????????????????????? ? Consider ways to continue the conversation beyond June. ? In other words, how can your company find opportunities to uplift and support your LGBTQ+ staff throughout the entire year?
