New hope is emerging for sickle cell disease patients, thanks to breakthroughs in gene therapy. Since 2008, the Doris Duke Foundation has supported over 40 research projects, providing $35 million to advance treatments for this long-overlooked condition. Two of the scientists behind this novel therapy, Daniel Bauer and Stuart H. Orkin, together received grants in 2013 and 2015 to identify core genetic sequences that upon #CRISPR intervention created healthy red blood cells. Today, the Doris Duke Foundation mourns the passing of Lola Adedokun, a treasured member of the Doris Duke Foundation family. For over a decade, Lola was the engine behind some of the foundation’s signature initiatives, including our Child Well-being Program and our $90 million African Health Initiative. Lola was a force of nature: wickedly intelligent, thoughtful, creative, kind. Lola’s vision has been permanently etched into the Doris Duke Foundation legacy. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, her loved ones, and her colleagues at The Aspen Institute.

Despite investments in biomedical research producing astonishing advances in in the diagnosis and treatment of human illnesses, health outcomes in the United States remain stubbornly below what they should be. We need stronger pathways for incentivizing and applying research to prevent disease and improve health outcomes. The Collective to Strengthen Pathways for Health Research — a joint effort of?Doris Duke Foundation,?the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Burroughs Wellcome Fund, Dana Foundation, The Donaghue Foundation, the Robertson Foundation and Susan G. Komen —?seeks to improve prevention and care, and invites the research community to help define an actionable blueprint for progress. What are the research priorities, incentive structures, and missed opportunities for innovation that hold the greatest potential to prevent disease or improve health outcomes from clinical encounters??Together, we will elevate voices and ideas. NYC Climate Week continues to be a tremendous success! A heartfelt thank you to the Doris Duke Foundation for co-hosting such a thought-provoking reception with us on Indigenous Futures. It was inspiring to hear how Indigenous art and storytelling—portrayed by artist Cannupa Hanska Luger, whose photography is featured on the cover of this National Geographic publication—can evoke powerful emotions and drive action to protect our planet. This perfectly aligns with the National Geographic Society's vision of using storytelling to ignite passion and inspire meaningful action. Research across various fields consistently shows that stories have the power to break down barriers, simplify complex ideas, change behaviors, and promote social change. What a great end to the week! Cheers Sam Gill, Kevin McAndrew, Danielle Levoit, Kaitlin Yarnall, Rob Flynn #NYCClimateWeek #IndigenousFutures #StorytellingForChange #ClimateAction #IndigenousArt #Sustainability #NationalGeographic #ClimateLeadership #DorisDukeFoundation

Excited and proud to host the Data Foundation and Ali Zaidi for the launch of the new Climate Data Collaborative at the Doris Duke Foundation #Treehouse this morning! This new initiative will build public-private cooperation to address the critical need for reliable, standardized data to quantify and verify climate mitigation activities across the United States. The Climate Data Collaborative will convene policymakers, investors, researchers, and other stakeholders to develop open-source greenhouse gas (GHG) protocols, data standards, and analytical tools. By improving the quality and accessibility of climate data, the CDC aims to empower decision-makers at all levels to take more effective climate action. David J.
