What kind of digital future are we building—and who gets to decide??That’s what I explored this weekend with Nabiha Syed, executive director of the Mozilla Foundation, First Amendment lawyer and leading commentator at the intersection of technology and society. Our conversation was part of a diverse and exciting slate of programming at the Muslim Public Affairs Council Foundation's The Muslim House? at SXSW (which DDF is proud to support). Nabiha and I discussed the central dialectic of the internet—and digital technology more broadly. It has played a powerful role in helping a wider range of voices connect with a more richly textured audience, but it has also intensified and worsened many of the material and social inequalities that plague our society. While our conversation covered a lot of ground, Nabiha left us with some great orienting insights: → We can all be activists where we are. Everyone can make choices in their work and lives about how to use technology—including AI—in ways that prioritize or corrode personal or shared social values. → Understanding is critical. We can't shape what we don't understand. Those of us most skeptical about technology should study how these tools work, what they can do, and what they can’t. → The future is what we imagine. Right now, we're heading toward one vision of the future—a vision held by a few people who may or may not share our interests. Artists especially can help us imagine alternative futures we want to live in. It was a great conversation, and I’d encourage folks to check out the amazing work that Nabiha and Mozilla are leading to help us invent a future that better reflects our highest ideals. #Technology #AI #TechForGood #SXSW

A new JAMA Network Open study finds that race-free lung-function equations predict asthma in children of color more accurately and more often than race-based ones. This aligns with findings in adults and highlights the need to reevaluate how race is used in clinical algorithms. As the conversation around equity in health care continues, research like this underscores the importance of updating outdated medical practices to ensure more accurate diagnoses and better patient outcomes. NEW: Climate and Land Use Planning: A Policy Guide for U.S. States and Territories Land use patterns impact greenhouse gas emissions and climate change in so many ways, from shaping the ways and distances people need to travel every day to the determining the kinds and amount of housing that is available. But a huge, under-appreciated impact is in the way it can diminish the contribution that natural and working lands (forests, farms) make to capturing and sequestering carbon. This new guide from the U.S. Climate Alliance provides a menu of policy and planning approaches that can help states maintain the health of their landscapes and unlock #NaturalClimateSolutions
The U.S. Climate Alliance has released a pivotal report, Climate and Land Use Planning: A Policy Guide for U.S. States and Territories, emphasizing the critical role of land use planning in reducing greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) emissions and enhancing climate resilience. The guide underscores the importance of preserving, restoring, and protecting natural and working lands (NWL) to enhance their ability to sequester carbon, reduce GHG emissions, and improve climate resilience. It outlines specific policies to promote healthy and resilient NWL through state planning, zoning, and conservation efforts. Additionally, the report analyzes effective governance strategies, including cross-sectoral planning and stakeholder engagement, as essential for integrating NWL considerations into broader policies. ?? Read the full report to explore how these strategies can help states achieve significant climate and community benefits. ?? https://lnkd.in/erFFsB5r #ClimateAction #LandUsePlanning #NWL #NatureBasedSolutions
