When you're fundraising, stay in investors inboxes! Send updates. Big or small. Ryan James, PhD from Dopl Technologies was one of the last founders invited on season 12 of The Pitch. I really liked him, but the question was "Will the VCs go for this hardware startup?" Ryan consistently sent updates to inform us of his traction, money raised, and competitions won. It kept him top of mind. And addressed any concerns we still had. I am SO glad we invited Ryan on the show! As we finished editing the Dopl episode this week, I watched version after version of Ryan's pitch. And every time I felt so thankful we didn't let this founder pass us by. I'm happy to share that as of last month, I have started a new position as a Software Engineer Intern at Dopl Technologies. Working with this team has been amazing so far, and I am excited about the opportunities and experiences that lie ahead! Dopl is currently focused on enabling telerobotic ultrasound procedures to happen across broad ranges, and my first project has been to integrate a new haptic controller to provide users with a better experience when controlling the ultrasound robot. I have been developing in Python and C++ and have been learning a lot along the way. I am also happy to have the opportunity to learn from Ryan James, PhD, my mentor here at Dopl, and sit in on some of the executive meetings to broaden my understanding of what it takes to run and grow a startup.

Congratulations to Ryan James, PhD and the Dopl Technologies team for winning the Washington State Black Angel Network’s first Dreamward Event Fund with a tele-robotic ultrasound solution solving the problem of access to life-saving specialist care in rural communities. Thank you to Gwyneth Borden of Remynt, Martinique Lewis of ABC Travel Greenbook App, and Emmanuel Acheampong M.Sc. of yShade.ai who were each fierce competitors with solutions to problems deeply felt by communities of color. We had an amazing Demo Day at the June 8th Launchpad Expo: Black in Tech Venture Conference sponsored by TriNet, Venture Mechanics Startup Incubator / Accelerator, and Dreamward Group. Attendees flew in from Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Atlanta to take part in the transformative impact of introducing a Black venture scale entrepreneurship ecosystem to itself in order to de-silo the Black professional class working in this area. Thank you to R. Miller Adams for a moving, inspirational, and actionable keynote. Thank you to our panelists Aina A., Sarah Studer, and Madin Akpo-Esambe for illuminating the current state of Black venture in the Pacific Northwest and some of the paths that Black founders and ecosystem builders can take to advance to the next level. Thanks also to all of the angel investors in the Washington State Black Angel Network for building the relationships of trust and learning the process necessary to practice collective economics in a sustainable way and ensuring investment goes where it is needed most.
