We’re excited to announce that the Wausau Water Works New Water Treatment Plant with PFAS Treatment project has won a 2025 ACEC Wisconsin Engineering Excellence Best of State Award and is eligible to win the Grand Award in May. Congratulations to Wausau and our project team! Donohue teamed with Becher-Hoppe Associates, Inc. to provide facility planning, pilot testing, design, and construction phase services to meet Wausau’s water treatment needs. A new water treatment system was selected to improve manganese and TOC removal as well as the color of the treated water. Based on site constraints, Wausau elected to construct a new treatment plant on a new site.?As construction of the facility began to take shape, voluntary sampling revealed PFAS in all six of Wausau's wells. The project team immediately switched gears and worked with Wausau to address this new challenge. Ultimately, it was decided that a GAC system would be added to the plant to address the PFAS issues, while the existing anion exchange process would serve as an interim solution.
