关于我们
Drew’s parents, David and Kimberly Hughes, are the founders of the Do It for Drew Foundation. From the very first hour, there was such an outpouring of love and support from their community, they knew immediately that they wanted to give back. As they learned of the medical errors that took Drew's life, they knew that changes in medical care had to be made. Sharing Drew's story would make a difference and help so many people in the future. The foundation focuses on 3 main goals: First, The Do It For Drew Foundation feels passionately that they can bring awareness and education regarding Drew's case, improve emergency medical care in rural communities like their own, and can help prevent other families from going through what they have had to endure. Secondly, the foundation raises money to support recreational and school athletics. We know how beneficial these programs were for Drew and his older brothers. David volunteered as a coach many times over the years and saw first-hand how team sports build character in a young person’s life. And lastly, they have formed The Drew Hughes Memorial Scholarship, to be given annually to a local High School student. The first recipient will be from Drew’s 2017 graduating class. The criteria will revolve around Drew’s admirable character traits. In the future we hope to expand this program to encourage young people to treat others as they would like to be treated and to understand that, as Drew said, "Your choices make your life."

I can think of MANY pros to this issue, and honestly no cons. I’m sure there are some that would object, but in my opinion those objections would mostly be selfish. Not only would it help protect paramedics/EMTs with violent patients etc…, it would protect patients. I have MANY thoughts on this… There is far too much resistance to change, but this could correct that problem. #DI4D #DoItForDrew

This is a bit long, but I hope you’ll take the time… Healthcare and the Do It For Drew Foundation When we lost Drew in June of 2013, I could never have imagined what I would run into while finding out the truth about what happened to him. I couldn’t believe that people I knew, that I assumed were good, honest, caring people…weren’t. So many people were so much more concerned about hiding, concealing, deceiving, and protecting themselves than doing what was right. Protecting an “image”, a reputation, and above all else, money. I’ll never forget one of the most disappointing times I’ve ever experienced was during the investigation of Drew’s death. We had just sat through the deposition of the paramedic who was in charge on the ambulance with Drew, and who administered the vecuronium to Drew. I honestly couldn’t believe all I had just witnessed. That someone that incompetent had been caring for my son just floored me and hurt so badly. I spoke with the head of the North Carolina Department of EMS and told her I would be sending a copy of the deposition for them to watch. Having worked for the state as a state trooper, had my behavior ever been this incompetent/negligent, I would have been removed immediately. I felt like anyone with half a brain would see what I saw and work to correct the problem quickly. I thought they would look at the information with no biases and do the right thing. I was wrong… and I’ll never forget the hurt I felt, especially when I learned so much about what had taken place behind the scenes. Oh!… and don’t get me started about the Joint Commission saying what happened to Drew wasn’t a sentinel event. ?? *read the rest here: https://lnkd.in/eaFznQru

“In 1981, President Reagan was shot and rushed to George Washington University Hospital where he underwent left lung surgery for a gunshot wound. Among other healthcare workers, respiratory therapists played a key role in his recovery. A year later he proclaimed Respiratory Care Week and leaders in Respiratory were invited to the signing at the White House.” To all those that work so hard to be the best they can be, thank you! #DI4D #DoItForDrew

I was always skeptical by nature, but my trust disintegrated in 2013, and the following year, with all I saw and learned while investigating what happened to Drew. Today 60% of our country doesn’t trust our healthcare system. Too many providers are in a “system” that doesn’t allow for independent thinking and common sense. Far too often your care is dictated by money ??…. “The proportion of adults who agreed they had ‘a lot of trust’ in physicians and hospitals declined from 71.5% in April 2020 to 40.1% in January 2024.”

We just hit 100,000 people that have seen Drew’s face, and SO MANY of those have begun reading about and learning what happened to him. We can’t help but smile. ?? Love that boy so much! #DI4D #DoItForDrew #NeverForget

He would have been 25 today. The “what could’ve beens” hit hard sometimes. To all those healthcare providers who work so hard to “do no harm”, never stop and always speak up when you see something wrong! What was done to Drew should have NEVER happened. #DI4D #DoItForDrew

I wish we didn’t feel the need to post this every year. For all the healthcare providers we’ve reached, who work so hard to improve patient care, there is still so much resistance to change. I honestly sometimes feel the problem is getting worse. Help us change that! #DI4D #DoItForDrew
