Year in review.
The Nuclear Weapons Council maintained a high operational tempo in 2024, exercising its statutory responsibilities to ensure a safe, secure, effective, and reliable nuclear deterrent. Teams nested under the NWC spent the past year solidifying 25-year nuclear stockpile requirements and demand signals, aligning interagency efforts to inform future requirements, right-sizing production capacity, and aligning budgets and programs between the DoD and the National Nuclear Security Administration. A significant 2024 milestone was NNSA’s production of the first stock-pile-ready plutonium pits—a critical component of our nuclear weapons—last accomplished some 20 years ago. It was also the first production of this kind executed in quantity since the Cold War. As a key recommendation from the inaugural 2023 Biodefense Posture Review (BPR), the Biodefense Council continued working to ensure that the Joint Force is prepared to operate in a contested biothreat environment and more effectively support the national biodefense enterprise. The Council has prioritized efforts to increase biothreat understanding and awareness across the Department and with our allies and partners, targeting key reforms to increase Joint Force readiness, especially in the Indo-Pacific region. The Biodefense is pursuing an ambitious work plan in 2025 to continue advancing the Department’s capabilities for biosurveillance and early warning of biothreats to speed decision-making and potentially mitigate biothreat impacts to national security. #SustainTheForce #Biodefense #SucceedThroughTeamwork

This week, the Department of Defense released the 2024 CBDP Enterprise Strategy, which will guide our work over the coming years. The Strategy’s overriding priority is to deliver threat-informed, operationally relevant chemical and biological defense capabilities at speed and scale. The new document also emphasizes expanding the CBDP’s interagency, international, and industry partnerships to meet this strategic priority. https://lnkd.in/enJXyFKx
