SB 194 (Effective 9/24/24): Pharmacists can now prescribe and administer HIV PEP, HIV PrEP (30-60 day supply), and related lab tests under a statewide protocol. 2?? SB 272 (Effective 1/1/25): Broad payment parity for pharmacist services (commercial & public insurers) Medicaid reimbursement at 100% of Physician Fee Schedule (SPA 24-0008) These changes expand pharmacists' roles and ensure fair compensation. Pharmacies across 35 states can now bill services to the medical benefit and receive reimbursements. Billing claims in the pharmacy setting is taking on a whole new meaning. We've mastered the art of billing medications to the pharmacy benefit, and now we face a new challenge: billing products, supplies, and services to the medical benefit. Medical billing involves a new set of "switches" called clearinghouses and yet another complex coding system (CPT, HCPCS) in place of NDCs. Understanding the place of service, taxonomy codes, provider types, modifiers, and diagnosis codes is important for successful medical claim submission. Pharmacies are rising to the challenge, actively learning and adapting to this new world.
