Rooting for underestimated founders (like myself) on the 0 to $1M journey | Get your first 100 Happy Paying Customers with go-to-market (GTM) micro-tests | 2x first GTM hire | $82M+ revenue generated for startups

When you start a business, the hardest part is not getting advice. (There is an overload of advice actually). The hard part is figuring out what applies to you and the business you want to build. When I was starting my business, everyone told me to “stay away from the 0-1 stage”. (All of these are well meaning people I am very grateful for!) Two main reasons were cited for this: 1?? "Founders do not have money" I was told founders are *never* going to spend money unless they are already generating millions in revenue. ? Wrong. I am often the first money they spend. Case in point: Recently a founder told me she booked a call with me as soon as she decided she wanted to pursue her business idea...at 2 AM. She joined the Founder-Led Marketing Club while on that call. We all invest in our business - in the things we believe will help us bring our vision for our business to life. (BUT I couldn't do what traditional 'early-stage startup consultants' do. I had to design an offer that is accessible for the underestimated founders I like working with at the 0-1 stage). 2?? "They don't get marketing" I was told founders do not understand marketing since they do not have experience with it. ? Correct. That's why my business exists. Founders come to me to find and keep Happy Paying Customers. Marketing is the means to that end they know their business needs. (Again, I had to tweak my business to best support these founders. I help them figure out how to avoid *random acts of marketing* and only do what actually serves their business.) — Reflection 3 years in: This is freaking hard. It took me a long time to get to this clarity about how to help underestimated founders get on the right path to their first $1M (in a way that also makes sense for me). I've embraced this challenge that others avoid. It's my privilege to help founders build thriving businesses on their own terms, right from day zero, or whenever they choose to prioritize monetization. (To be clear, we all have to find that right balance for each of us. I'm grateful for the peers who work with founders at later stages - easy referral opportunity!) Marketing at the 0-1 stage might be messy and uncertain, but it happens to be in my zone of genius and happiness. — I geek out about supporting underestimated founders at the 0-1 stage with Kimberly R. Daniel and Stephen Lewis on the DO GOOD X Podcast. Episode link in comments. ?? What early advice did you choose to ignore in your business?
