关于我们
Despite significant advantages and investment into the region to grow the biotech sector in the D.C. Area, we still lag behind the current powerhouses of biotech in Boston and San Francisco in terms of number of startups developed in the area and in venture capital investments in biotech companies in the region. The DMV Petri Dish name derives from the standard scientific equipment name “Petri Dish” or a plate made to culture (grow) various microbes such as yeast and bacteria. DMV is an acronym for DC, Maryland, Virginia and is a popular slang term to describe the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area. The philosophy of the DMV Petri Dish is reflective of the real outcomes of various microbes when combined together in a single dish. In a Petri Dish, a group of a single origin bacteria or yeast are referred to as a colony. We aim to become a collective of colonies representing different DIY-Bio and maker groups in the D.C. Area. The preferred outcome of placing multiple colonies (groups) in a single dish is to observe interactions (collaborations) and crossbreeding (intergroup projects) develop over time. The intended results of DIY-Bio collaborations and crossbreeding is to have unique and innovative projects, develop a sense of self-assurance in members, have fun while doing science, and grow a startup pre-incubator environment. We offer: - A community of scientists, inventors, and tech enthusiasts - Presentations on a variety of topics in science and tech - Regular meetups for people to work and network - A transparent and helpful community of minds to help build your ideas

Congratulations to Dr. Fan! It was wonderful chatting with Jason F. and the team at Bits in Bio to brainstorm ideas for bringing biologists and technologists together in the DC Metro Area. We hope 2025 brings more opportunities to connect, network, and build together :)
Celebrating 1 year at Fulcrum Genomics LLC and my first year post-PhD in industry. What a year it's been! Looking forward to more exciting opportunities in 2025. Some highlights: - (Re)starting the Bits in Bio meetup in the DC/MD/VA area. Shoutout to folks who turned up this year our meetups (you know who you are). Special thanks to Taylor Caparosa for helping me organize the first happy hour and DMV Petri Dish for setting an example! - Speaking at the Nextflow Summit and meeting the wonderful people at Seqera. - Learning from the incredible team at Fulcrum and the many folks that we've collaborated with throughout the year. - Meeting and being inspired by many passionate new and soon-to-be PhD grads in the DMV area.

We had a wonderful time this weekend presenting to and interacting with the public at the 2024 NoVa Maker Faire! The exhibit was a major success with folks being introduced to 3D Printed Lithophanes while exploring the themes of life and nature. We are proud of our success in bringing together artists, emerging technologies, and maker talents to inspire and promote STEAM. This would not have been possible without the City of Alexandria, Virginia and their $5k award for our STEAM in the Night World proposal. A huge thank you to our contributors, who made this happen on an unimaginably tight timeline: Ulisses Santamaria, Matthew Zamora, Jay Kociol, Brian Williams, Tim Murphy, William Xie, Ben Schulman, and Kent Slowinski.
