Fantastic article on the 'Heavy Press Program' by Brian Potter "The Heavy Press Program is a classic example of military technological spillovers, and the potential returns from government investment in technological capabilities. The heavy presses were built specifically for military purposes — making lighter and stronger parts for supersonic aircraft — but once they were built, they proved useful for all sorts of other things, from spacecraft to power systems to commercial aircraft. The U.S. has accrued the benefits of the presses for 70 years and counting, and at least part of America’s success in commercial aircraft manufacturing can be attributed to their existence. Meet our Giant Metal DED printer to print parts as large as 10x10 feet in a controlled environment. This Direct Metal Deposition (DMD) machine with multiple process heads can print metal parts up to 10ft in diameter and 10ft in height. The system’s coaxial nozzle with local Argon shielding protects the melt pool for a variety of materials. It can add a variety of materials precisely at select locations on the part, which allows for fabricating multi-material components with functional properties. DM3D is proud to contribute to NASA’s RAMPT (Rapid Analysis and Manufacturing Propulsion Technology) project. "NASA’s RAMPT (Rapid Analysis and Manufacturing Propulsion Technology) project is on the cutting-edge of additive manufacturing – helping the agency and industry produce new alloys and additively manufactured parts, commonly referred to as 3D printing, according to Paul Gradl, the project’s co-principal investigator at NASA Marshall. Since its inception, RAMPT has conducted 500 test-firings of 3D-printed injectors, nozzles, and chamber hardware totaling more than 16,000 seconds, using newly developed extreme-environment alloys, large-scale additive manufacturing processes, and advanced composite technology. The project has also started developing a full-scale version for the workhorse RS-25 engine – which experts say could reduce its costs by up to 70% and cut manufacturing time in half."
