A couple's experience with their special needs child has led the parents to help others who may face similar challenges. Tarun Chawdhury, MSCS 22, and Mousumi Chawdhury created an AI-powered speech app for parents and caregivers to support children with echolalia. The condition causes people to involuntarily repeat words or phrases by other people, often simply echoing them. The effort to build the app, AI4ECHOLALIA, was a complete family affair, with Tarun—now instructing part-time in the Georgia Tech OMSCS program—and Mousumi working on the app with their second-grader Arinjoy, who was diagnosed with echolalia in 2019. Their high school daughter Tanisha rounded out the team. The family’s invention finished second place in the #TEDAI 2024 Hackathon in the fall in San Francisco. The proud parents watched as their daughter took the stage (second from left) to talk about their work. AI4ECHOLALIA is designed to support speech development in special needs children as an educational tool while families wait for formal speech therapy. The team was in good company at the competition, designed to promote open-source applications of AI for urgent societal or environmental issues. Zookeeper AI (first place) created an assisted web dashboard to assist zookeepers with animal care, and Women Defining AI (third place) showed its AI Voice agent for domestic violence calls. Thrilled to share that our family’s journey in creating AI4Echolalia, an AI-powered patent pending app for children with echolalia and developmental speech delays, was featured by College of Computing at Georgia Tech today! ?? ? Inspired by my son Arinjoy’s experiences, we developed this app to assist parents and caregivers in supporting children with speech challenges. Combining AI and speech therapy principles, AI4Echolalia earned 2nd place at the 2024 TEDAI San Francisco! ?? This journey was inspired by our son Arinjoy and brought to life with the collective efforts of my wife Mousumi Chawdhury, daughter Tanisha, and me. Today, we’re publishing the first stable release of Llama Stack. With this release, Llama Stack now includes streamlined upgrades with backwards compatibility for future API versions and automated verification for supported providers.

With the worldwide impact that AI is having on all aspects of society, I feel that it is important to advance the theoretical foundations of AI in conjunction with investment in AI technology. One recent example is the STOC 2024 paper by Adam Kalai and my colleague and good friend, Santosh Vempala, that establishes a statistical lower bound on the rate of generating incorrect outputs ("hallucinations") by pretrained language models. It was great to see this result featured in the Nature article mentioned below.

To people who see the performance of DeepSeek and think: "China is surpassing the US in AI." You are reading this wrong. The correct reading is: "Open source models are surpassing proprietary ones." DeepSeek has profited from open research and open source (e.g. PyTorch and Llama from Meta) They came up with new ideas and built them on top of other people's work. Because their work is published and open source, everyone can profit from it. That is the power of open research and open source.
