Wire Fraud Prevention Tip #5! Look for changes in wording, grammar, or signature blocks. Often an impersonator will "sound" distinctly different than the person you were previously in contact with.

Wire Fraud Prevention Tip #4! Be skeptical of requests for urgency. Fraudsters often pressure victims to act quickly. Take your time to verify requests, especially if they seem urgent or unexpected. An urgent request may fluster you leaving you vulnerable to make decisions you wouldn't normally make or cut out verification steps.

Wire Fraud Tip #3! Avoid email responses for verification. Fraudsters can control spoofed or compromised email accounts, making replies appear legitimate when they're not. When in doubt call for verification.

Wire Fraud Prevention Tip #2! Scammers have become increasingly sophisticated so be sure your employees know this tip for preventing wire fraud! Double-check email addresses for fraud prevention. Scammers mimic legitimate accounts closely, using company naming conventions. Inspect email headers and don't solely rely on the display name. Remember, even legitimate addresses can be compromised.

Wire fraud is easily preventable if employees are trained on best practices when completing a wire transfer. We will share 5 tips over the coming weeks to help your organization avoid this common occurrence. Tip #1: Verify wire transfer requests by calling the person using a previously used number to confirm authenticity, especially for new or changed instructions, and exercise caution with changes, especially before holidays or on Fridays.

This particular case happened right around the holidays. The customer received a call from Mastercard letting them know that 7 million+ card numbers were for sale on the dark web. They had antivirus and firewalls galore, they thought they were too small for the bad guys to notice. How did the bad guys get in? The customer’s headquarters was being moved to a different location. For a couple of weeks, some things were open that shouldn’t have been. The bad guy got in, an employee clicked a link they shouldn’t have and that’s how they got access to the data. Timing is everything. You are most vulnerable when you don’t have time to pay attention to detail, especially during a company move.
