Since 1989, DKT International, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., has been promoting family planning and HIV/AIDS prevention through social marketing in the developing world. Today, DKT International provides health impact at scale across more than 100 geographies. We believe that family planning is key to healthier men, women, and communities, but choice is key to empowerment. DKT enables women and men to take control of their reproductive destinies by boosting decision-making power through educational campaigns, increasing family planning product options, and securing products in easy-to-access outlets at affordable prices. Choice is integral to our mission, and innovation is the foundation of our work. With nearly 3,000 employees worldwide, DKT carries out its work through four approaches, each a testament to DKT’s expanding impact and flexibility within changing markets and evolving technologies. 1.) DKT’s classic social marketing model leverages the private sector to distribute products and targets family planning education to every sect of society, from young women to healthcare providers, often the gatekeepers to contraception. 2.) DKT sells products regionally, building brands and transnational trust. 3.) In 2016, DKT acquired WomanCare Global, enhancing our ability to sell high-quality sage abortion products through existing networks. Lastly, 4.) DKT designs online resources to reach people outside our institutional programs. In 2023, DKT delivered more than 64.1 million couple years of protection (CYPs), making DKT one of the largest private providers of family planning in the world. DKT’s sales totals for 2023 included 949.6 million condoms, 119.9 million oral contraceptives, 32.95 million injectables, 5.38 million IUDs, and more than 34 million safe abortion products, like misoprostol and MVA kits. DKT’s 2023 sales averted 32,500 maternal deaths, 16.9 million unsafe abortions, and 16.75 million unintended pregnancies.

DKT International is proud to announce that we have launched an intervention to enhance contraceptive choices including Long-Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) access in India. This initiative will focus on: - Expanding access to a range of contraceptives, including LARC methods. - Empowering women with comprehensive knowledge about a range of contraceptive choices. - Reducing financial barriers to contraceptive options. - Diversifying implant and intrauterine system (IUS) suppliers to ensure availability and choice. Key actions under this initiative include: - Conducting healthcare provider training to build capacity and improve service delivery. - Implementing targeted communication campaigns to raise awareness about a range of contraceptive options including LARC methods. - Working to lower implant prices through strategic procurement mechanisms. DKT operates one of the world's largest contraceptive social marketing programs across India. One of the goals of the Trump Administration is to sow chaos, including freezing foreign assistance and dismantling USAID.?This further hurts vulnerable populations and damages the U.S.'s global reputation. Cuts to family planning and contraception services will have immediate consequences, harming women and families who rely on these critical resources. This uncertainty also paralyzes USAID partners and ironically could fuel a rise in unwanted pregnancies and, tragically, an increase in global abortion rates. Today is the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, a day to amplify and direct the efforts on the elimination of this practice. The UN writes that “to promote the elimination of female genital mutilation, coordinated and systematic efforts are needed, and they must engage whole communities and focus on human rights, gender equality, sexual education and attention to the needs of women and girls who suffer from its consequences.” DKT stands in solidarity with the 230+ million girls and women worldwide who have experienced Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). FGM violates human rights, causes lifelong harm, and must end. On International Day of Education, we recognize the transformative power of knowledge in improving lives and shaping futures. At DKT, we are dedicated to advancing sexual and reproductive health (SRH) education. DKT-led initiatives, such as “Berani Berencana” (Take Control) in Indonesia and “Batela Lobi Na Yo” (Protect Your Future) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, provide young people with judgment-free spaces to access accurate contraceptive information, debunk common myths, and identify the best methods for their individual needs. In Latin America, “DKT School” delivers engaging and comprehensive sexual education to middle and high school students, fostering awareness and understanding in an inclusive manner. In these challenging times, investing in global sexual and reproductive health is more important than ever. We celebrate Sida for committing SEK 4.3 billion (~391 million USD) to advance SRHR services from 2025 to 2029. This significant investment will help ensure that vulnerable individuals in low- and middle-income countries have access to the essential healthcare they need and deserve. It will also contribute to reducing the prevalence of harmful practices such as female genital mutilation and child marriage, as well as decreasing unintended pregnancies, unsafe births, and unsafe abortions.
Exciting developments in Sweden’s commitment to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR)!????? The Swedish government has announced a groundbreaking 4.3 billion SEK budget dedicated to SRHR, alongside a proposal to enshrine abortion rights in the constitution. These initiatives represent a critical step in safeguarding reproductive rights and ensuring equitable access to healthcare for all. Policy change plays a pivotal role in advancing safe abortion access. It sets the foundation for creating enabling environments where healthcare providers, educators, and advocates can ensure that reproductive health services are accessible, affordable, and stigma-free. This global effort resonates strongly with our work at The Case for Her. Today Alexandra Lundqvist had the opportunity to witness this impact firsthand during a field visit with DKT International. She observed an abortion training session that highlighted the importance of equipping healthcare professionals with the skills and tools to provide safe, compassionate, and life-saving care.
