    With a little more programming, I was able to build a very basic 3D model of the human cochlea that lights up to show how nerve fibers in specific regions respond to different sound frequencies.     Demonstrating how gravity affects inner ear crystals when present in the semicircular canals (represented by the green LEDs) is critical for learning how to treat common forms of #vertigo like #BPPV. This is the last core feature to be added to the electronic educational #vestibular apparatus model we are developing. Learning the math behind normal vectors of planes, tangents to circles, and some basic fluid dynamics was defintely fun and it’s getting close to accurately representing the fall rate of the crystals in the canals. Thanks to Amy Bowley and Michel PIQUET for the feedback in support of this feature! Technical Notes: This proof of concept rig uses an Arduino Nano 33 BLE with an addressable RGB LED strip on a 3D printed base. This will be integrated into an anatomically accurate model with all 3 canals once the math and features are perfected on this mockup.

    Visual representation of the otolith organs came up high on the list of requests for the electronic inner ear model. Here’s a proof of concept that shows how different linear movement stimulates the saccule and utricle. This will be integrated into the anatomical model by multi-color LEDs so that you’ll be able to see all 5 sensors of the inner ear in one model. Thanks to all for your great ideas and feedback! More to come with electronic otoconia “falling” in the canals to clearly show how repositioning maneuvers work!

    The electronic vestibular apparatus is starting to take shape with three selectable modes! I got great feedback and ideas to improve the educational potential of this model. Still thinking how to best visualize the otolith organs to show linear acceleration, but I wanted to get the canals refined first.     For anyone with positional vertigo (eg. #BPPV), this model demonstrates how each canal of the inner ear is triggered with movement in each plane of motion/rotation. Our understanding of vestibular anatomy helps improve dizziness care for everyone!

    Experimenting with technology to improve education of the #vestibular system has been so rewarding! This is a proof of concept for a potential new model for teaching vestibular anatomy. This is an #ESP32 (think #Arduino/rasberry pi) with a motion detection sensor that’s paired with Adafruit Industries LED string lights. Each canal’s plane of motion/rotation light up when excited/inhibited which is precisely what happens in our own inner ears. Special thanks to Alex B. for his patience and encouragement as I learn the possibilities of microcontrollers in our space!

    Are you struggling to get a concrete diagnosis for your disorder? Many people who suffer from dizziness, imbalance, or vertigo have trouble finding out why. While the majority of patients experiencing vertigo do have a vestibular disorder, dizziness can also be caused by problems that have nothing to do with the vestibular system. The key to getting an accurate diagnosis is to find the right expertise. Most general practitioners may not be able to assist.
