I've been thinking a lot about social class divides lately and how much many of us (myself included) live in class-segregated bubbles. It took a national election like this one to make us realize how little we understand each other's experience across class lines because surprisingly few of us have close relationships with people from different economic backgrounds. This reflection (I'm still thinking!) led me to write this blog in Psychology Today. Each of us hold multiple identities within us: gender, race, class, religion, gender identity. Social psychology shows us that when external circumstances threaten one identity (like economic crises, inflation, lay-offs etc), it pushes that identity and related interests to the forefront of the mind and drives people's decisions like voting, to protect and preserve those interests. Other identities and interests recede into the background for the moment. Others unaffected by these economic circumstances don't see these dynamic identity shifts unless they have close relationships across class lines. Christian David Guzman, my colleague at University of Massachusetts Amherst, shows how STEM can be used as a force for good. His research maps flood risk in economically vulnerable communities in New England. In this short video he talks about his journey into engineering as a child of immigrants. Since 2021, the Institute of Diversity Sciences at UMass Amherst has partnered with Reboot Representation to tackle an ambitious goal: doubling the number of BLNA women graduating with computing degrees by 2025.????????? ? We're proud to share that we've achieved that milestone – 2 years ahead of schedule.?? ? This achievement is a win for the future of tech. By partnering with Reboot, we’re helping build a more inclusive and highly skilled technical workforce who will shape our future.?? ? Thanks to the Reboot Representation partnership, we've seen incredible progress. Through our partnership, the Leadership Academy Program (https://lnkd.in/dwgEfZZ) has supported underrepresented women of color in tech, providing them with opportunities for community-building, mentorship, and real-world experiences. ?????? 90 students?have been supported, gaining valuable leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills, and completing internships and research projects that will shape their careers for years to come. ???? ?
