Career Strategist & Coach for UX Professionals | Writer, Speaker, & Podcaster | Personal Growth Nerd | Anti-Capitalist | Radically Inspired by People
There is growing interest in consulting and freelancing as an alternative to the traditional 9-5 job, especially with all the tech layoffs over the past 2 years. Between UX consulting and career coaching, I've been self employed for over half of my career (2013, 2015-2016, 2018-now). The challenges, creativity, experimentation, learning, and autonomy suit me very well. Numerous resources have helped me along the way, especially podcasts, which are fantastic for learning on the go or while multitasking. I'm a huge podcast enthusiast and spend about 10-15 hours tuning in each week when driving, walking, or doing stuff around the house. Don't worry, it's not all business! ?? ?? ?? Here's a shortlist of some of my go-to shows that have been helpful for building my businesses over the years—I've listened to virtually every episode. - Ditching Hourly by Jonathan Stark (https://lnkd.in/gDh7uvmq) - The Business of Authority by Rochelle Moulton and Jonathan Stark (https://lnkd.in/gP4dfNSa) - Low Energy Leads by Lex Roman (https://lnkd.in/eEnEHnch) - The Recognized Authority by ?? Alastair McDermott (https://lnkd.in/eZwMpPSq) - Duped: The Dark Side of Online Business by Dr. Michelle Mazur and Maggie Patterson (https://duped.online/) - I especially enjoy the juicy critiques and call-outs of shady and scammy business practices - Compassionate Side Hustle Strategy by Rochelle Sanchez (https://lnkd.in/grUdqTgx) - The History of Byzantium from Robin Pierson (https://lnkd.in/g5uC57WV) (jk not business but if you know me you know I'm a history nerd and this one is great, right Jeremy Miller?) Feel free to leave a comment with other shows that are worth tuning into!

The tech job market is competitive, and your search might take longer than anticipated. I am grateful I was in the position to search full-time for as long as I did. If you need to take on other work while job-seeking or take a step back for personal reasons, try to be consistent with your efforts; even half an hour a day of applying, networking, or learning adds up over time. Here is how I approached applying to jobs: - Cold Applications: While external recruiters and internal referrals helped me to get some leads, most of my interviews came from cold applications. I found most of the roles on LinkedIn, with some on Diversify Tech, Built In, Otta.com, and Slack communities. - Choose Wisely: I only applied for roles aligned with my current skills, even though I know I can learn new languages on the job to minimize auto rejection. I didn’t count myself out of aligned jobs purely based on years of experience and applied for roles asking for 1-5 years (I have somewhere in between). - Quality over Quantity: I aimed for three applications per week, which allowed me to plant seeds consistently but also to spend time on other critical areas, like networking, interview preparation, and, importantly, self-care. - Resume Strategy: I used two versions of my resume. I have a one-page version for applications and a two-page version that includes references (with their permission) and recommendations for direct outreach or follow-up emails. - ATS Consideration: Ensure the resume you use for applications passes ATS scans. This is crucial for getting past the initial screen. - Cover Letters: I only wrote cover letters when required or when I was particularly excited about a role because I felt my resume spoke for itself and that my time was better spent learning. - Cold vs. Warm Outreach: I tried LinkedIn Premium for a couple of months to do cold outreach for roles I applied to, but it didn’t impact my results. I got more out of relationships where I already had a point of connection, like through existing connections or people in Slack communities I’m part of. Balance your job search activities with caring for yourself, and don’t give up! #jobseeking #softwareengineer #womenintech
