Her work emphasises the value of diversity and multidisciplinary collaboration in tackling AI biases and promoting fairness. ?? Ilina Georgieva, LL.M. – Senior Specialist Scientist in AI Governance & Regulation, TNO / External PhD Researcher, Leiden University A seasoned researcher in international law and AI policy, Ilina explores inclusive governance models for AI. Her work with DIVERSIFAIR includes developing a comprehensive typology of AI harms, contributing to more equitable regulatory frameworks. ?? What if identical #resumes with different names were submitted to #ChatGPT? Could we find #biases associated with #ethnicity, and could the system favor names related to some demographics more often than others? An article by Bloomberg found that the best-known #generativeAI tool systematically produces #biases that disadvantage groups based on their names. We asked #ChatGPT the same question after 30 days, and the system updated the answers to a more effective, accurate result. The difference? The system now recognizes the similarities between resumes and decides not to choose between candidates whose only difference is their names. ?? The first two images show the responses generated in early April, while the third shows the responses generated in early May. ?? This is a clear example of why we must continue scrutinizing systems and find the biases encoded in a universe of #data. We are excited to share a recent Euronews article discussing the findings of the #Riscanvi audit, conducted by Eticas AI as part of the DIVERSIFAIR Project. The audit, which was released in July, uncovered substantial deficiencies in the algorithm used in Catalan prisons, raising concerns about bias, fairness, and transparency in AI systems. The DIVERSIFAIR project aims to ensure that technology is applied ethically and without discrimination in crucial sectors, such as criminal justice. The audit’s findings emphasise the need for increased accountability and more rigorous scrutiny of algorithmic decision-making in public institutions. Published in August, the article takes a closer look at these issues through a discussion with Gemma Galdon Clavell, PhD, Founder and CEO of Eticas AI. ?? ?? Internship Opportunity: Communicating Fairness in AI ?? Are you interested in tackling bias and discrimination in Artificial Intelligence? TNO is offering an internship as part of the DIVERSIFAIR Project, supported by the EU Erasmus+ programme. ?? Your role: You will help create a website that clearly communicates recommendations for making AI more fair and inclusive. This involves: reviewing academic literature, podcasts, and other media on AI fairness; summarising key findings and presenting them in an accessible way; writing and designing the content for the website, with space for creative input. ???? What TNO is looking for: A Master’s student in Science Communication, AI and Society, Gender Studies, or a related field. Strong interest in societal fairness, equity, and bias in AI.
