Native Art & Culture - Powwow A powwow symbolizes a variety of things, including: Celebration of culture?Powwows are a way to celebrate Native American culture and traditions through dance, song, and other festivities.?? Community gathering?Powwows are a time to reconnect with old friends, make new ones, and share experiences. They are also a place to heal and rejuvenate.?? Passing on traditions?Powwows are a way to reflect on and pass on traditional ways of life to future generations. American Indian identity?Powwows are a key symbol of American Indian identity in the 20th century. They allow members of different tribes to come together and celebrate their culture. Nez Perce Tribe The Nez Perce Tribe is a federally recognized tribe in north-central Idaho with more than 3,500 enrolled citizens. Headquartered in Lapwai, ID, the Nez Perce Reservation spans about 770,000 acres. The current governmental structure is based on a constitution adopted by the tribe in 1948. The tribe is governed by a nine-member elected executive committee, known as the Nez Perce Tribal Executive Committee or NPTEC. The NPTEC is obligated to protect the health and welfare of the Nez Perce people. This means protecting and preserving treaty rights and tribal sovereignty, Nez Perce culture and the general environment of the reservation. History The Nimiipuu people have been connected to the lands and waters of modern-day Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and Montana long before the creation of the Nez Perce Reservation. Culture Today, the Nez Perce Tribe upholds many traditional lifeways, including fishing, hunting, gathering, and traditional ceremonies and celebrations. https://lnkd.in/eBePgbds

Great Lakota, Dakota, Nakota Nation The Lakota language dates back to 900 CE. The earliest Lakota history was recorded in?waníyetu wówapi?(winter counts). Lakota speakers had lived in the upper region known as Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Due to conflicts, they moved west and settled in the Great Plains where they found the?Pahá Sápa?(Black Hills). The Lakota made the Black Hills their home. The Beginnings Some of the earliest Oceti Sakowin history was documented by waníyetu wówapi (winter counts), which are pictorial calendars of prominent events. Images were drawn on animal hides, and later the calendars also used fabric and paper. Seneca Nation On?dowá’ga:’ Seneca Nation Has a Proud & Rich History The Seneca were the largest of six Native American nations which comprised the Iroquois Confederacy or Six Nations, a democratic government that pre-dates the United States Constitution. The historical Seneca occupied territory throughout the Finger Lakes area in Central New York, and in the Genesee Valley in Western New York, living in longhouses on the riversides. The villages were well fortified with wooden stake fences, just one of the many industrious undertakings. Today the Seneca Nation currently has a total enrolled population of over 8,000 citizens. The Seneca Nation supports its own people and benefits surrounding communities with a variety of cultural, educational and economic efforts. www.sni.org

The LUMBEE of NC HISTORY AND CULTURE In southeastern North Carolina, amongst the pines, swamps, and dark waters of the Lumbee River, you will find the heart and homeland of the Lumbee People. The ancestors of the Lumbee came together in the shelter of this land hundreds of years ago - survivors of tribal nations from the Algonquian, Iroquoian, and Siouan language families, including the Hatteras, the Tuscarora, and the Cheraw. The ancestors of the Lumbee were recognized as Indian in 1885 by the State of North Carolina. In 1956, Congress recognized the Lumbee as an Indian tribe while denying the People any federal benefits that are associated with such recognition – an action that the Lumbee continue to fight today. Lumbee tribal headquarters are located in the small town of Pembroke. The tribal territory and service area is comprised of four adjoining counties: Robeson, Scotland, Hoke and Cumberland. The tribal housing complex, also known as ‘The Turtle’, houses most tribal services. The Lumbee are a strong People with a dynamic history and promising future.
