Today marks the start of National Hispanic Heritage Month where we celebrate U.S. Latinos, their culture and their history.?? Hispanic Heritage Week was first acknowledged in 1968 by Congress and was later expanded to a month in 1988. The celebration begins in the middle rather than the start of September because it coincides with national independence days in several Latin American countries: Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica celebrate theirs on Sept. 15, followed by Mexico on Sept. 16, Chile on Sept. 18 and Belize on Sept 21.? This morning, Mental Health America released its annual State of Mental Health in America report. Each year, we use federal data to evaluate the mental health of all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Our findings in this year’s report are clear: the U.S. is in a mental health crisis. Here’s a snapshot of what we learned: ?? 23% of adults - nearly 60 million Americans - experienced a mental illness in the past year. ?? 2022 had the highest number of deaths by suicides ever recorded in the U.S.; 5% of adults and 13% of youth reported having serious thoughts of suicide. ?? 1 in 4 adults with frequent mental distress could not see a doctor due to cost. ?? 1 in 5 youth had at least one major depressive episode in the past year; over half (nearly 3 million youth) did not receive treatment.
