You never know what hidden discoveries can be found under the microscope. Dionna Williams at Emory University School of Medicine studies how inflammation, HIV therapies, and substance use impact the brain. While looking at one of their latest samples, the Williams lab captured this heart-shaped nucleus with their Revolution microscope. Learn more about the lab’s research and how they’re helping to understand HIV infection in the brain: https://lnkd.in/gp893MGs

This month, ECHO added a few new friends to the team. Please help us extend a warm welcome to Rachel Kurihara, Boyton Jones, and Donald Cameron! Rachel started as our new Software QA on October 17. In addition to her work at ECHO, Rachel knits and creates knitwear patterns for her Etsy shop, Stitch & Skein. She loves to play volleyball and go camping with her family. She's looking forward to learning more about microscopy, especially from people like Luke and Mira who know it so well! Boyton joined the manufacturing team on October 2, and is enjoying working with a product that helps people and moves research, especially cancer research, forward. In his free time, Boyton is re-learning how to play the guitar and teaching his grandnephew to play as well. He's excited about continuing to get a deeper understanding of ECHO microscopes & the intricacies and details of their creation. Donald is also new to the manufacturing team, starting on October 16. He worked as an automotive mechanic for years, and once the industry started to change, he decided he wanted to try something new. On a bit of a whim, Don started at TCI in the engineering program and found his sweet spot. Of the TCI opportunity and how it lead him to ECHO, he says, "It was one of the best decisions I ever made." Don is thrilled to be part of a company where he can see the impact of his work every day. Welcome to the team!?

Layla Billowitz, ECHO's Director of West Coast Sales, is celebrating five years at the company this month! Layla studied chemical engineering before getting into microscopy sales after graduating. "All the biology I know has been taught to me by my customers," she likes to say. After almost 25 years in the industry, Layla had the opportunity to move to ECHO. "If I wasn't selling microscopes, I don't know what I'd be doing," she says. She was really excited by ECHO's ability to come into an established market and do something so different and innovative. "It's a high quality piece of equipment that anyone can use," she says. "You don't need a week long microscopy boot camp to use an ECHO scope." Outside of work, Layla loves to mountain bike. She has been racing mountain bikes for years, and is the team director for her local middle and high school NICA mountain bike team in Bend, Oregon. Her favorite place she's cycled is the Dolomites in Italy.?

?Congratulations to Alex Abejar on five years with ECHO! Alex started as a Regional Sales Manager in 2019, moving his way up through the sales team to his current position as Director of North America Sales. "It definitely flew by," he says of the time at ECHO. "Every day is different, every day is exciting." Alex was drawn to ECHO because of the combination of functionality and good looks of ECHO's brand and products, but what ultimately made his decision to join was the people. He loves being at ECHO because of the small catalog, allowing him to focus on the exciting and more technical aspects of each product. He's also a big fan of the collaborative nature of the company and loves that everyone is driving together towards the same mission and goals. Outside of work, Alex enjoys cooking and hanging out with his cats, Kitty St. James and Lenjamin Franklin.?

We'd like to offer congratulations to Jacquie Ramirez on her promotion to Field Service Engineer! Jacquie has been with ECHO for almost five years, and her recent transition to the service team is indicative of her impact. On the service team, Jacquie travels around the country to support users. "It's always something new," she says of traveling weekly for work. One of her favorites parts of the work has been meeting new people and interacting with ECHO's users. "Everyone is really open to learning," she notes. Her favorite aspect of the work is getting to look at the test slides. "It's fascinating," she says, to look at the samples.?

Last Friday, ECHO held our second annual end-of-summer picnic at Pioneer Park in San Diego, and it was a blast! The day was filled with cornhole, a little rugby, and Kenyatta showing off his kendama skills, teaching the crew how it’s done. We had a potluck-style feast, with everyone bringing something delicious to share. We spent the day eating, laughing, and welcoming our extended ECHO families into the fun. A huge thank you to Dahhee Kim for organizing such a great event and to Larry Almuete for capturing it all with his amazing photos. Now it’s time to gear up for the end of the year!
