VA member Discogs has published an important analysis on the factors driving the rising cost of vinyl records - a key focus topic from our recent Gen Z Report. The analysis draws on Discogs' own extensive data from its collector community as well as survey research from our recent Vinyl Alliance Gen Z Report. In surveying over 1,100 Gen Z vinyl fans, we found that while 47% say vinyl is "expensive but worth it to own something they'll cherish forever", 36% say they've reduced or stopped buying records due to rising prices. Emphasis is rightly placed on manufacturing costs and supply chain pressures, which arose out of the pandemic and are still being felt across the industry, as contributing factors toward higher prices. At the same time, the article points out how collectors are growing more selective in their purchases, and rightly argues that the quality and intention of vinyl releases must remain high to respect fans' loyalty and desire to own something special - especially those young fans new to the format and collecting, whose positive experience with vinyl and perception of its value is key to the format's future. These challenges are real, but they also present an opportunity. By focusing on quality, authenticity, and intentionality, we can ensure the format continues to thrive for both longtime collectors and the next generation of fans. #vinylrecords #GenZ #markettrends
