You might have felt the panic this week: Vinyl sales in the U.S. are reportedly down by 33.3%, marking the first decline in 17 years. Inflation and industry greed are to blame. But these headlines didn’t paint the entire picture – and vinyl sales are actually up 6.2%. The vinyl industry is just one facet of vinyl culture, and Discogs can uniquely report on record collection trends, not just record consumption. And more record collectors are coming to Discogs now than ever before in our 20+ year history. Today we’re witnessing the heightened power of local, independent record stores. “We want to set the record straight: Vinyl is still in demand, indie stores are thriving, and the market is growing.” Check out our story for even more details in the big picture. https://lnkd.in/gBPMijDr

That’s a wrap on another Haarlem Vinyl Festival. From Billie Eilish dance parties at our hi-fi vinyl listening room to deep dives into the data and motivation behind collecting, Discogs was facilitating music obsession and discovery all weekend. Thank you to the wonderful artists who shared stories and music with record collectors across our activations. And another huge thanks to our partners O2 Music, Audio-Technica, and Ophon Music Furniture, as well as the Haarlem Vinyl Festival, for helping support such a wonderful and enriching time.

Haarlem Vinyl Festival is back this weekend, and Discogs is thrilled to be a part of the fun — especially a unique opportunity for deep listening. On Saturday, September 28, we are presenting a high-fidelity audio experience showcasing vinyl records and personal stories shared by special guests at the Phil in Haarlem, NL. From Haarlem Vinyl Fest founder Anouk Rjnders to tattoo artist Henk Schiffmacher to a Billie Eilish listening party curated by Melanie Lentz, the lineup is stacked. If you’re around, swing by and visit us. Thanks to our sponsors at O2 Music, Audio-Technica, Ophon Music Furniture, and, of course, the Haarlem Vinyl Festival for helping make this listening experience come to life.

Imagine walking into a virtual record store and having the new arrival bins completely curated just for you. That's the take from NTX Vinyl's G.I. Sanders on Wantlister, a powerful new Discogs tool that makes it even easier for collectors to find the records they want. In the latest episode of the Discogs Insider with NTX Vinyl, our very own Kevin Lewandowski and Lloyd Starr chat with Sean Johnson of Stoat about the improvements that Wantlister brings to our existing Wantlist experience as well as the development journey that brought us here today.

We are absolutely thrilled to announce the first members of our Community Advisory Turntable. These seven incredible Discogs users, who represent all facets of the community, will join our leadership team in discussion to help us better understand how record collectors, independent sellers, music archivists, and more use our tools. As we continue to modernize our platform, community input is essential to our ongoing development and enhancements. We are already looking forward to our first official meeting this fall.

This week, the Discogs staff attended A2IM (American Association of Independent Music) Indie Week in New York to discuss the record collecting journey, and all of the twists and turns it might take. Seller engagement lead Russ Ryan hosted a chat about the emergence of listening rooms and Hi-Fi bars, (and how they are forging communities) while Discogs brand director Jen Agosta addressed an important part of the Discogs fabric: Why we collect records. Discovery, community, and the why behind it all is a big part of what we do at Discogs, and it was a true honor to partake in Indie Week. See ya next year NYC, and thanks to all that attended!
