On Monday, Lisa Sherry, Community Outreach Coordinator, provided a presentation on Implementing Community-Based Harm Reduction Strategies. The objective of the presentation was to provide information on the opioid epidemic and the fentanyl crisis and how harm reduction strategies such as providing free Naloxone (Narcan) to communities can save lives. Ms. Crystal, Peer Support Specialist, in Franklin County provided the commissioners with potential locations for the Naloxone stands to be placed within the county. The Commissioners were receptive to the information provided and wanted to support these efforts to save lives due to an opioid poisoning event. There will be further discussions with county, city, and local businesses as to how best to proceed with this project. On this past Saturday, the Jefferson/Madison County Department of Health and Union Hill AME Church hosted a Community Health Fair in the Waukeenah community in Jefferson County. Local non-profit providers such as DISC Village, Big Bend Area Health Education Center (AHEC), Healthy Start and others attended the event providing health screenings for A1C and cholesterol and information on services and programs.
