What an incredible experience working on Disasters Expo USA! ?? Even though I wasn’t on the show floor, the amazing feedback I heard from attendees, speakers, and exhibitors truly made me smile. ?? Seeing how valuable this event was for so many people reaffirmed why I love what we do in the tradeshow industry—bringing together brilliant minds to collaborate, innovate, and advance their field. Over the past few months, I’ve learned so much about the disaster industry, the impact of first responders, and the essential role of NGOs and communities in disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. I’ve met and worked with so many inspiring individuals—our keynote speakers, roundtable panelists, podcast guests, advisory board members and partners—who all made this journey wonderful! The economic toll of #disasters is staggering. This cycle of destruction and rebuilding is unsustainable. Shifting financial priorities toward #prevention is key to breaking this cycle. The 2024 Regional Assessment Report on Disaster Risk in Latin America and the Caribbean (RAR24) ?? https://lnkd.in/ea8dU3gh published by UNDRR Las Américas y El Caribe, reveals a troubling risk trend: In Latin America and the Caribbean, disaster-related losses total, on average, $58 billion annually, but only 6% of public budgets for DRR go to prevention. In comparison, 78% is spent on response and reconstruction. To urgently boost prevention we can promote investments that have a high cost-benefit ratio: Early warning systems, resilient infrastructure and nature-based solutions have already proven to be cost-effective in reducing economic losses. Moreover, strengthening public-private partnerships to expand disaster insurance coverage is critical, as currently, only 5% of disaster-related losses in developing countries are insured, compared to 40% in developed nations. The need to rethink how we finance disaster resilience was a main topic at the just-held Disasters Expo USA, where I was the keynote speaker. The costs of inaction continue to mount, straining public budgets, displacing communities, and deepening social and economic inequalities. Every dollar invested in disaster prevention saves up to four dollars in reconstruction costs, making DRR one of the most effective investments a government can make.
