When Hurricane Ian tore through Florida, it left countless disaster survivors grappling with loss and uncertainty. Among them was a resilient individual whose journey to recovery was made possible through the dedication of Aqueelah Johnson, a Disaster Case Manager (DCM) with St. Vincent de Paul Disaster Services, and the compassionate partnership of the St. Bernard Project. Aqueelah supported this disaster survivor every step of the way, providing critical support and connections to resources needed to rebuild their home and life. The survivor's home suffered extensive roof damage, leading to interior destruction and a broken hot water heater. Recognizing the need for significant repairs, Aqueelah partnered with the St. Bernard Project, which stepped in to replace the roof, repair the interior, and install a new water heater. The total value of these transformative repairs was $10,929.58. With each repair completed, the survivor’s hope grew. By the time the final work was done, their joy and gratitude were immeasurable. Through Aqueelah’s unwavering support and the generosity of the St. Bernard Project, the disaster survivor achieved full recovery, regaining not only their home but also a renewed sense of safety and security. This story is an example of the power of compassion and community-driven action. Together, we can transform lives in the wake of disaster. #DisasterRecovery #HurricaneIan #CaseManagement #CommunityImpact #RebuildingHope #NonProfitsWorkingTogether

  • When Hurricane Ian devastated Florida, countless families were uprooted from their homes, including one remarkable disaster survivor who, despite facing overwhelming challenges, never gave up hope. This disaster survivor, a disabled caretaker of her two disabled children, faced eviction after their rental home suffered unrepaired damage. With no safe place to turn, the family was forced into a cycle of instability, living in hotels and placing their possessions in storage. Enter Shanon Granado and the Florida Disaster Case Management Team for Group 3, part of the Disaster Services Corporation - Society of St. Vincent de Paul USA. The team worked to guide this family through the complex recovery process, creating a tailored recovery plan and identifying resources to address their immediate and long-term needs. A critical step in their journey was a referral to Bay Area Legal, where the survivor received essential assistance with the eviction case. Meanwhile, Shanon and the survivor collaborated to locate an affordable, safe home that would accept the family despite the eviction record. Their perseverance paid off. The disaster survivor was approved for the rental home, and their case was presented to the Long-Term Recovery Group (LTRG) CDA Funding Table, where the full move-in amount of $4,499.25 was approved. Thanks to this funding and the determination of the family and the Disaster Case Management Team, they will soon move into their new home on the path to a brighter future. This story highlights the vital role Disaster Case Management plays in helping disaster survivors rebuild their lives. It also underscores the importance of collaborative partnerships in ensuring no family is left behind in their recovery journey. To the entire Group 3 team working on Hurricane Ian recovery: thank you for making recovery a reality for families like this one. #DisasterRecovery #CaseManagement #HurricaneIan #LongTermRecovery #CommunityImpact #NonProfitsWorkingTogether

  • Last week, DSC's Disaster Case Management team, led by Shanon Granado, proudly supported Operation Stand Down in Florida. This grassroots event allowed the Disaster Case Managers to connect with hundreds of veterans, offering essential support and resources to help them reclaim stability and dignity in their lives. What is Operation Stand Down? In times of war, exhausted combat units would "stand down" to recover in safety. Today, Operation Stand Down brings that same spirit of refuge and recovery to our nation’s veterans, many of whom now face different battles on the streets. This event, built on the philosophy of offering “a hand up, not a handout,” provides homeless and at-risk veterans with direct services, benefits assistance, and vital referrals for mental health, housing, employment, and addiction recovery. Our Parish Recovery Assistance Centers (P-RACs) are essential community lifelines, strategically positioned in key parishes to offer holistic recovery support after disasters. These centers complement, rather than replace, the work of FEMA, State agencies, and local VOAD partners, reaching survivors who might be socially, geographically, or culturally isolated. P-RACs are on the front lines, providing immediate case work and essential resources to survivors. With a focus on emotional and spiritual support, each center follows standards set by NVOAD and partners with Texas A&M Extension Services (TEEX) to deliver “just in time” training, empowering volunteers with the tools to make a real difference. Our dedicated Vincentian volunteers, experienced in disaster response, are here to support councils in disaster-affected areas. Their expertise, combined with the logistics and operational support from DSC, makes recovery smoother and more effective for everyone involved. Join us in supporting the life-changing work of P-RACs. Together, we can ensure they have the resources and guidance needed in this crucial time. Our P-RACs are helping survivors access the immediate aid, resources, and information provided by FEMA, the American Red Cross, and VOAD partners. Let’s continue making a difference, one community at a time. #DisasterRecovery #CommunitySupport #Vincentians #PRAC #VOAD #DisasterResponse #RebuildAndRecover?#Nonprofit #HELENE #MILTON #NonprofitsWorkingTogether More about us at: www.svdpdisaster.org
