From Ground Zero to a Global Mission Following the attacks on September 11, 2001, Dr. Gregory Ciottone was on the front lines at Ground Zero, leading DMAT MA-2 as part of the federal medical response. What he witnessed changed everything. Amid the devastation, one fact stood out—healthcare professionals at all levels need some degree of training to respond to large-scale disasters. From that moment, the concept of the?Disaster Medicine Institute (DMI) was born. Today, DMI trains healthcare professionals, emergency responders, and hospital leaders in disaster medicine, crisis leadership, and emergency management. I'm thrilled to share my completion of the Fundamentals of Disaster Medicine course through the Disaster Medicine Institute. This course is a great tool in preparing healthcare providers of all levels for the challenges of disaster response and serves as a prerequisite for the International Board of Disaster Medicine certification for prehospital providers. As part of my long term career goals, I recently completed the International Board of Disaster Medicine certification exam and am now a Fellow of the International Board of Disaster Medicine. Fantastic course taught by Gregory Ciottone, MD, FACEP, FIBODM, FFSEM, which built on the education and training I received from Lynchburg Doctor of Medical Science Program (DMSc) and Travis Kaufman, DMSc, APA-C, Rob Gray, DMSc, Frank Caruso, Elyse (Edwards) Watkins, DHSc, PA-C, DFAAPA, NCMP, and Jon B. Christensen. Thanks Jessie Hockett, DMSc, PA-C for the motivation and being the first of our class to go through the process! Disaster medicine professionals are equipped to bring order to disorder and hope to despair.
