Trauma can arise from military service, accidents, abuse, or other experiences - manifesting suddenly or developing gradually - but it is not always visible, and its triggers can vary widely. Focusing on this, we invited our corporate partner community for a webinar, Moving On: Embracing Disability Identity Following Traumatic Events, as thought leaders explored the effects of trauma and its manifestation in the workplace. Thank you to Stephen Peacock (of Edelman Financial Engines) for moderating this engaging conversation, and to the speakers Curtis Kelley, M.A. (of TD SYNNEX), Michelle Berrett (of Pfizer), Victor Calise, PLY (of Walmart) for driving this discussion forward! The Runway of Dreams' 10th-anniversary event was an absolute hit! Disability:IN was thrilled to be represented by our Inclusion Works Coordinator, Ashley Kingston, who was able to attend this amazing celebration of #DisabilityInclusion in fashion. The event provided a space and opportunity to embrace our differences, challenge stereotypes, and showcase the power of #Adaptive products and #InclusiveDesign. To learn more about the Runway of Dreams event or to gain insight into the Runway of Dreams Foundation, be sure to check out Ashley's post below and visit https://lnkd.in/eKn5epj
What an evening! I’m still in awe after attending the 10th anniversary of the Runway of Dreams event in Brooklyn, NY. Madison Telvin, the host, truly rocked it! You might recognize her from the viral commercial, "Assume I can, so maybe I will!" With #NewYorkFashionWeek in full swing, the spotlight on fashion and beauty is at an all-time high. I’m thrilled that there is a dedicated space for disability inclusion in the fashion and beauty industries. The event showcased individuals representing the spectrum of disability while celebrating that fashion and beauty are for everyone. It also highlights the importance of ensuring brands include adaptive and universal design products and collections. My main takeaway from the event is: Anyone deserves to feel and look confident and sexy, regardless of disability! Thank you, Disability:IN, for giving me the opportunity to attend this spectacular event and for connecting me with like-minded people who are part of this movement.

We were thankful to join other disability and #a11y leaders at the White House to celebrate the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (#ADA). While the ADA legislated access for millions of Americans, and we are making tangible progress for disabled professionals worldwide, there is still significant work to do. Together, we’re working to advance equity in the workplace! Thank you to members of the Disability:IN staff, board members, and partners who joined us yesterday including?Allyce T., Chad Jerdee, Apoorva Gandhi of Marriott International, Ted Kennedy Jr., Jill Houghton, Rhett Buttle of Public Private Strategies, Amy Naoum, and Casey Oakes of Google. In honor of #SuicidePreventionDay, I wanted to touch on my own experience as a survivor of two suicide attempts. Although this video was not the easiest to make, I believe I can play a small part in helping make a difference in the lives of those who may be experiencing #MentalHealth problems or suicidal thoughts. If you are or know someone who could benefit from this video or additional resources, I encourage you to help share this video to spread the word. I’m thankful to be a part of an organization that takes mental health and suicide prevention seriously and encourage you to check out Disability:IN’s resources on suicide prevention at https://lnkd.in/gF8FRBXQ [VD: As Justis’ voice speaks, white captions populate a black screen. On the bottom right is a white Disability:IN logo.] Transcript: Today marks Suicide Prevention Day. Worldwide, over half a million people die by suicide each year, and it is the third leading cause of death among teens and young adults ages 15 through 29. And for every life taken by suicide. There are many more who attempt, including myself. My name is Justis and I have survived two suicide attempts as a child and a young adult. On Suicide Prevention Day, I want to share the reminder that you are never alone. Reaching out can feel impossible, but it's the bravest thing you can do. In the workplace, employers can play a vital role in suicide prevention and mental wellness. If you, a coworker, or someone you know is struggling, it is important to seek support that can help you through it. Connect with your HR department or manager to learn what options are available to you. Learn more about mental health and explore additional resources in Disability:IN’s Mental Wellness Resource Guide at: https://lnkd.in/gXDRtHPk resource-guide.
