#Accessibility innovations change lives. Brian Jeansonne, a man who was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), and the innovative voice technology our partners at Microsoft developed to help him communicate with his own authentic voice. Some of you may remember this video from our 2024 Global Conference, where Jenny Lay-Flurrie shared it on the mainstage. Check out the full video below ?? #AccessibleTech #a11y

Banging your head against a wall uses 150 Calories an hour.

Today, in our internal Accessibility 101 training, I learned about Brian Jeansonne, a man whose story has profoundly shifted my perspective. Imagine training for a half marathon, only to discover a seemingly small foot drag is the first sign of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). In the fall of 2019, that became Brian's reality. At 48, his life, along with his wife Kristy's and their five children's, changed irrevocably. Brian and Kristy share their journey on TikTok, reaching millions of people and raising awareness about ALS. They show us the raw, human side of this devastating disease, where every day presents new challenges. ALS steals your ability to walk, eat, and eventually, breathe. Brian faced the unimaginable choice: a tracheostomy, saving his life but silencing his voice. In the video, you can see how Microsoft's ongoing work with the community on Azure custom neural voice, a personalized, natural-sounding voice technology, empowers Brian to have his voice back. Voice banking is designed to capture the intonations, tone, and emotions of human voices to make computerised voices sound more personalised, allowing Brian to communicate authentically. This isn't just a tech demo. It is a testament to the power of accessibility. It reinforces how vital it is that we build accessibility into the core of everything we create. Technology can be a lifeline, bridging gaps and restoring dignity. As Jenny Lay-Flurrie, Microsoft's Chief Accessibility Officer, stated in the closing words of the training, "Being accessible is being inclusive. This is the one community you can join at any time, and most do through accident and injury. In fact, most of disability is non-apparent, neurodiversity and mental health, you cannot see. That’s why at Microsoft, we believe that accessibility is not just a core value but a fundamental right. We are dedicated to creating an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive." Brian's story was a powerful reminder to me about the importance of accessibility in technology as a fundamental human right. Everyone can make a difference. If you're creating online content, don't forget to add ALT text to images, which makes your content more accessible to people using screen readers. Also, be mindful of colors for color-blind people and ensure good contrast to improve the experience for everyone. Let's keep pushing the boundaries of what's possible and make sure technology is a bridge, not a barrier. We can live in a world where everyone, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to connect, communicate, and thrive. #Accessibility #Inclusion #Innovation #Microsoft #AssistiveTechnology #AI #VoiceTech

One of the highlights from our time in Bengaluru was the opportunity for our team to tour the Accenture Accessibility Center. A huge thank you to Accenture for this incredible experience! Be sure to check out Ching-Shiuan's post below for insights on how Accenture is driving #Accessibility in the workplace!

Accessibility from the Start?? Last month in Bengaluru, alongside the Disability:IN team, I had the opportunity to visit Accenture’s Accessibility Center—the largest of their 36 Centers worldwide. These Accessibility Centers serve as interactive spaces where individuals can explore various assistive devices and technology solutions to find the tools that best support their needs. I first heard about the center from Rudy Guiao at Disability:IN’s APAC conference in Tokyo back in 2023, and I’ve been fascinated ever since by the idea of providing a wide range of accessibility options—empowering individuals to define the support that works best for them. What surprised me most during my visit wasn’t just the extensive collection of solutions, spanning physical disabilities to mental health support, but also how seamlessly accessibility is integrated into the onboarding process. New employees can select their preferred accommodations just as easily as they choose their company computer. #Accessibility professionals often emphasize that accessibility should be built in from the start, not treated as an afterthought. Seeing this principle in action was truly inspiring. In fact, during the hour-long tour, I even discovered a tool that could help me with my own needs! A huge thank you to Surendra S for guiding us through this state-of-the-art Accessibility Center, and to Ruchi Chaudhri (She/ Her), Tricia Raut and Vani Seshadri for organizing the visit. I look forward to seeing more people benefit from this deep learning experience when Disability:IN returns to Bengaluru in November for the APAC Global Journey to Disability Inclusion for Business conference, hosted by Accenture and also sponsored by AWS and Bank of America.
