Disability Rights California defends, advances, and strengthens the rights and opportunities of people with disabilities

关于我们

We are the largest disability advocacy agency in the nation, with 275 staff members. The Board of Directors, all of whom are now appointed by existing board members, reflect the diverse constituency of the agency and the ethnic and language community of California. Vision Statement We envision a barrier-free, inclusive, diverse world that values each individual and their voice. In this world, all people with disabilities enjoy the power of equal rights and opportunities, dignity, choice, independence and freedom from abuse, neglect and discrimination. Disability Rights California works to bring about fairness and justice for people with disabilities. To reach those goals of fairness and justice, we may: 1. File lawsuits on behalf of individuals or groups 2. Investigate charges of abuse and neglect 3. Build peer/self advocacy groups 4. Forge community partnerships 5. Advocate for change in laws, regulations, and public policy 6. Provide information to those who may not know about their rights

  • TOMORROW March 22, there will be a rally outside the Foothill Police Station 12760 Osborne Street, Pacoima, CA 91331. Join to demand justice and honor Linda Becerra Moran. *Content Warning: Death, Transphobia, Self-Harm, Police, Sex Trafficking* “DRC expresses profound concern regarding the tragic death of Linda Becerra Moran at the hands of the Los Angeles Police Department. Linda Becerra Moran, a transgender woman of color, contacted emergency services, reporting that she was threatened and being held against her will. In reported bodycam footage of their arrival, LAPD officers, rather than prioritizing the safety and wellbeing of the victim, escalated the situation. Within a few minutes of arriving, officers interpreted her distress to kidnapping as a threat to them in need of an involuntary mental health hold and then used lethal force. This abrupt change in focus from a reported kidnapping raises critical questions about LAPD’s response and the action to equate distress with a need to strip someone of their autonomy and immediately label them a as “danger to self.” The real danger was LAPD.” -Eric Harris, Associate Executive Director DRC stands with Linda's family, community members, and organizations demanding justice and accountability. We have a duty to protect each other and ensure no one seeking help from the police is killed upon interaction. #DisabilityRightsCalifornia #LindaBecerraMoran #TransRights

  • Today the President signed an executive order that threatens to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education and related programs. The federally funded services that students with disabilities rely on for education access are already limited and are now at risk of losing even more with these planned education cuts. Public education must remain public, and the rights of students with disabilities must be safeguarded. DRC opposes the following efforts to undermine education for students with disabilities: - Potentially reduce funding for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA); - Restructure the Office for Civil Rights (OCR); - Divert public funds to private school vouchers We urge Californians to contact their congressional representatives and express opposition to these harmful proposals.
