DRC supports the Blind community and their passionate protest against Uber and Lyft’s policies and actions, which are prejudiced against them. Too many Blind and disabled people are refused rides and discriminated against by drivers. This must stop!

We’re excited to announce that DRC has been awarded a grant from The James Irvine Foundation to help advance economic justice and employment opportunities for people with disabilities, particularly those with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (I/DD). This $100,000 grant to DRC extends the foundation’s work to the disability community by supporting a landscape analysis of employment opportunities for Californians with I/DD. “As California works to phase out subminimum wage employment and expand opportunities in competitive, integrated employment for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, this grant is timely and well-positioned to have an impact on policy and practice,” said Andy Imparato, Executive Director of Disability Rights California. A landmark settlement has been reached to protect San Diego residents who rely on their vehicles as their only form of shelter from unjust enforcement and fines. The settlement includes ticket forgiveness, amendments to law enforcement training, expansion of safe parking programs, and accommodations for individuals with disabilities. This marks a significant victory for equitable treatment and support for this vulnerable population, while setting a groundbreaking precedent for addressing the needs of unhoused individuals in urban areas. Fact: Prop 47 reclassified certain non-violent property and drug crimes from felonies to misdemeanors, but it did not legalize theft under $950. Misdemeanors can still lead to jail time.
