In her article for Bloomberg Law, DirectWomen alumna Elisa Garcia writes, "Today’s corporate boards seek directors who know how to ask questions that dig under the surface of an issue and approach problem-solving and decision-making in different ways. In-house lawyers can be good listeners and consensus builders—skills they use in their GC roles. They’re trained to ask key questions that can lead a board to rational and reasoned decisions." Since its founding in 2007, DirectWomen has known the value of women lawyers as board candidates. Read this article by Kyhm Penfil published in THE CORPORATE BOARD to learn more about what skills and expertise lawyers bring to the #corporateboardroom. As Lily Yan Hughes, Chair of DirectWomen, mentions in the article, there is often a misperception that a company does not need a lawyer on the board because they already "have a general counsel" to do their legal work. Yet, those same companies recruit CEOs and CFOs to serve as directors even though they have their own executives in those roles. The bottom line? Lawyers should be considered equal board candidates to all other C-suite executives.
