The Boston Business Journal recently interviewed Lauren Günther, Director of Sustainability at DiMella Shaffer, about how we’re designing buildings to meet increasingly stringent standards and expectations. ? "The environment is integral to everything we do, shaping our project approach and driving education and research to anticipate future needs." ? Our holistic approach focuses on reducing operational and embodied carbon, enhancing community resiliency, minimizing water use, and prioritizing health and wellbeing. We leverage Passive House, all-electric, Net Zero Ready, and geothermal district systems, while strongly advocating for the preservation of existing buildings. Our leadership also extends to shaping Massachusetts' energy codes through active participation in the Stretch Code Advisory Committee. Decarbonization is not a future challenge—it’s a solution we are advancing today. https://lnkd.in/ez26xHch #architecture #design #susatainability #lovewhereyouwork

Once a middle school in Hyde Park, this historic building has been reconstructed as the first LGBTQ+ affirming income-restricted community in New England, offering 74 vibrant, accessible units. The project includes shared areas including a sunroom, library, art gallery, a multi-purpose room, designed to foster connections amongst the residents. The interior is thoughtfully designed with elements inspired by the Pride flag, incorporating its colors into pieces of furniture, doors, light fixtures, and room accents to create an inclusive atmosphere. Outside, a landscaped courtyard with multiple seating areas and a walking track provides space for relaxation and exercise. This community honors both the building's history and its new role as a sanctuary for the LGBTQ+ senior community, offering a safe, supportive space for residents to live and connect. Thank you, Bartholomew | Lighting for an insightful presentation! It was an eye-opening discussion on how lighting can both empower and oppress communities, particularly those that have been historically marginalized. We look forward to future conversations on equitable lighting design.
Bartholomew Lighting was honored to present Light Justice in The Public Realm, to DiMella Shaffer yesterday. This AIA credited talk focuses on how quality lighting is a signifier of power, status, and privilege and how quality lighting has been denied to marginalized communities. This is approached through understanding the historical precedents that show how lighting is used as a tool for surveillance, policing, and the control of nocturnal behavior in communities of color. Through examining case studies, the attendees learn how neighborhoods are impacted by the unequal application of lighting in the environment as well as it's impact on the physical and mental health of those living in these conditions. By providing insights and examples of good or "just" lighting versus oppressive "unjust" lighting, we described how lighting and nighttime visual quality have been overlooked or undermined in historically marginalized neighborhoods. We look forward to future presentations regarding how unjust lighting affects underserved communities. We hope to engage with like-minded firms to host this conversation, hoping to inspire more equitable design solutions for vulnerable under-resourced communities. #Light_Justice #SocialEquity #DesignJustice #Advocacy #AIA #BlackOwnedBusiness
