On Friday, Congress took a critical step to continue innovative Medicare policies by passing a government funding bill that extends telehealth and acute hospital care at home provisions through September 30, 2025. These short-term extensions include expiring Medicare telehealth flexibilities and the Acute Hospital Care at Home Program. However, not all essential telehealth provisions were included. For example, the ability to offer telehealth services with no cost for those on high deductible health plans. The short-term nature of this extension and the loss of key provisions will continue to drive uncertainty and limit access to care until we can permanently integrate proven, innovative care models like telehealth and hospital at home into our healthcare system. The extension through September provides an opportunity to gather more evidence, further demonstrate the value of these services, and pave the way for lasting policy solutions that ensure access to high-quality, innovative care for all. However, temporary measures are merely a stopgap. It’s time for policymakers, healthcare leaders, and innovators to come together and champion permanent solutions that have already demonstrated their value. At the Digital Medicine Society (DiMe), our mantra is 'show; don’t tell.' Over the next six months, we will continue to partner with leaders in these innovative care models to document and promote the value of telehealth through our V1C Coalition (see examples below ??) and demonstrate how digital solutions can meet the requirements of the Acute Hospital Care at Home Program in scalable and sustainable ways. ??
