🚉 Public Transit: A Lifeline Beyond the Commute NJ TRANSIT’s newly launched "Gateway to Hope" program is a powerful reminder of the many roles public transportation plays in the lives of our communities — far beyond getting people from point A to point B. Baraka and a coalition of partners, to focus on providing critical support to individuals experiencing homelessness. Through mobile outreach teams, housing assistance, and a future 24/7 drop-in center, "Gateway to Hope" will bring wraparound services directly to those in need, at the heart of one of New Jersey’s busiest transit hubs. “We all have a shared responsibility in New Jersey to ensure our residents have access to the resources and help they need to thrive and live healthy, productive lives,” said NJDOT Commissioner and NJ TRANSIT Board Chair Fran O’Connor. 🚆 Climate Resilience Takes Center Stage on the Hudson Line The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is taking bold steps to safeguard the future of Metro-North’s Hudson Line with the launch of its Climate Resilience Blueprint. This forward-looking initiative focuses on a 20-mile stretch from Riverdale to Croton-Harmon, N.Y.—an area increasingly vulnerable to tidal flooding, stormwater runoff, and extreme weather. The Blueprint outlines a comprehensive approach to rebuilding critical infrastructure—culverts, drainage systems, slopes, retaining walls, shorelines, and tracks—while setting long-term standards for shoreline improvements and track elevations. It’s all part of a larger mission: protecting a key economic artery for the Hudson Valley from the rising risks of climate change. As a flagship project of the MTA’s historic $68.4 billion 2025-2029 Capital Plan, this effort reflects the agency’s “better, faster, cheaper” ethos. 🚀 Meet Metro Rapid: A Game-Changer for Public Transit in Hamilton County 🚍 Metro has reached an exciting milestone in its journey to introduce Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) to Hamilton County. With the unveiling of its name and design, Metro Rapid is set to bring a new era of fast, efficient, and reliable public transportation to the region. At 60 feet long - 20 feet longer than a standard bus - Metro Rapid vehicles will accommodate more passengers while maintaining agility on the region’s steep hills and winding roads. These articulated buses, combined with key innovations like dedicated bus lanes, traffic signal priority, level boarding platforms, and off-vehicle ticketing, will create a seamless and efficient transit experience. But why is BRT such a big deal for public mobility?  ✅ Faster, More Reliable Transit – Dedicated lanes and priority at intersections mean reduced delays and more consistent travel times.  ✅ Economic Growth & Accessibility – BRT corridors often drive economic development, bringing jobs and opportunities to communities along the route.  ✅ Sustainability & Cost Savings – By offering a more attractive alternative to driving, BRT reduces congestion, lowers emissions, and makes public transit more cost-effective for riders and cities alike. Metro Rapid will launch along Reading Road and Hamilton Avenue in 2028, following a design process that has been guided by community input every step of the way. APTA leaders made a strong case for public transportation’s role in strengthening the U.S. economy during their recent Hill meetings in Washington, DC. From March 4–6, agency and business member executives met with over 15 Members of Congress and key staff to discuss how sustained federal investment not only drives growth in U.S. businesses—with 77% of federal transit funds flowing to them—but also creates and sustains millions of family-wage jobs across manufacturing, technology, and services. The discussions underscored the essential nature of public transit in everyday life—helping people get to work, medical appointments, and leisure activities—while providing the stability needed to spur private-sector investment and onshore manufacturing. APTA’s leadership team also reinforced these points through a comprehensive letter to all 541 Members of Congress. The letter detailed how every $1 billion invested in public transportation generates or sustains 50,000 family-wage jobs and called for full funding in the FY25 THUD Appropriations Act—seeking $21.9 billion for public transit and $20.6 billion for passenger rail. 🚆 Public Transit: A Powerful Economic Engine 🚆 A new analysis, commissioned by the Partnership for New York City, highlights the massive economic impact of the New York MTA’s proposed 2025-2029 Capital Plan. ✅ $106 billion in economic activity ✅ 70,000+ jobs statewide ✅ Average direct labor income of $119,000 per worker While investments in mass transit are often framed as infrastructure improvements, they are also economic catalysts. The MTA’s proposed capital plan will create opportunities across New York City, Long Island, Hudson Valley, and beyond, supporting industries like construction, engineering, and manufacturing. Beyond the numbers, this plan underscores a critical reality: Public transit is an investment in people, businesses, and the long-term prosperity of New York State. 🚍 COTA Takes Action to Protect Riders in Extreme Weather 🌡❄ The Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) is strongly committed to community well-being. A new policy to waive fares on all routes during extreme temperatures shall ensure that no one is left without safe transportation in dangerous weather conditions. Whenever the National Weather Service issues a heat or cold advisory or warning, fares will be waived for the rest of the day across COTA’s fixed-route bus service, Mainstream services, and COTA//Plus. This policy provides those in need with access to cooling and warming centers, libraries, recreation centers, and other safe locations—free of charge. COTA President/CEO Monica Tellez-Fowler emphasized the importance of this decision: "Our mission is to serve all Central Ohio residents, including those seeking shelter during dangerous conditions."
