Happy Match Day! Did you know that St. Joseph’s has a long history of training physicians? In 1934, it became the first hospital in Arizona to be approved for interns. These young doctors in training were paid $65 a month, plus room and board. With a wide range of residency programs (including Creighton University Health Sciences Campus - Phoenix whose inaugural class of 42 students started at St. Joseph's in 2012), the hospital continues to train the physicians of tomorrow. https://ow.ly/RhAg50VmyxS. #stjosephs130th #matchday

  • In a recent spot on CW7's Arizona Daily Mix, Samad Hashimi, MD, director of robotic and Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery at Dignity Health St. Joseph's Norton Thoracic Institute, explained how minimally invasive robotic surgery allows expert surgeons to diagnose and treat conditions earlier and faster with less complications than traditional surgery. At Norton, our incredible team has performed more than 1,000 minimally invasive robotic surgeries, including the nation's first robotic esophageal surgery. ??? https://ow.ly/we6350Vl8B5 #stjosephs130th

  • Happy Anniversary, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center! ?? We’ve come a long way from our humble beginnings. Moved by the plight of tuberculosis patients who flocked to Arizona, the Sisters of Mercy initially opened St. Joseph’s Sanitarium in a six-room cottage that they’d rented in downtown Phoenix. A few months later, they gathered enough resources to begin construction on the Valley’s first hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital. The hospital’s groundbreaking took place March 19, 1895, on the Feast of St. Joseph. #stjosephs130th

In observance of #EssentialTremorMonth, we're sharing the story of focused ultrasound patient Geoff Oldfather. Geoff had been living with #essentialtremor for years. This neurological condition causes involuntary shaking, usually in the hands. As his symptoms progressed, Geoff struggled to perform everyday tasks, such as buttoning his shirt, typing on his computer, and feeding himself. The 68-year-old Southern #Arizona resident was referred by his neurologist in Tucson to Francisco Ponce, MD, Chief of Stereotactic and Functional #Neurosurgery at #BarrowNeurologicalInstitute in #Phoenix. Barrow is the only facility in Arizona to offer MR-guided focused ultrasound (#MRgFUS) for the treatment of essential tremor and tremor-dominant #Parkinsonsdisease. Geoff underwent the incisionless procedure, in which sound waves from different directions are guided by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to converge on a small area of tissue deep in the brain. The heat generated at the point of convergence burns only that targeted area of tissue. This ablation prevents the firing of the circuits responsible for essential tremor, thus relieving symptoms. "I literally was tremoring, and during the treatment I was able to watch my hand and watch it just steady out," Geoff said. "When they pulled me out of the MRI, I was laughing; I was clapping my hands. That was it, a miracle." Learn more about focused ultrasound treatment at BarrowNeuro.org/FUS.
