In September 2024, Digital Square at PATH, the Ghana Health Service, and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH hosted a Ghana Women in Digital Health event in Accra, #Ghana, as part of the Digital Innovation in Pandemic Control (DIPC) project. The event convened 95 female participants—the majority of whom were students or young professionals—to learn about digital health and the diverse roles that make up this field, hear stories and advice from women leaders in digital health on how to overcome commonly faced challenges, and connect with local digital health stakeholders. By engaging these enthusiastic participants, the event catalyzed connections and disseminated knowledge to help inspire a local and more representative #digitalhealth workforce in Ghana.? Digitalization is widely recognized as increasingly necessary to modernize health systems. As a result, governments and donors are making significant investments in digital health interventions and the required underlying digital public infrastructure to meet a range of needs — improving the quality and coverage of patient care, decreasing the workload of health care workers, and strengthening health systems. But as digital health matures and becomes more widely implemented, a stubborn gap remains: evidence. Which interventions are working? Which are cost-effective? In November 2024, our team conducted a field visit to Ghana as part of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH-funded Digital Innovation in Pandemic Control (DIPC) project. Over the course of the week, our team engaged directly with health workers - such as nurse Eunice Fumador, shown below with the PATH team in Central Tongu -?and regional health leaders to assess enhancements in the new child health module in the DHIS2 E-Tracker system. Key takeaways include: ?????? Health worker insights: Health workers praised the child health module for speeding up registration, improving vaccine tracking, enhancing reporting efficiency, streamlining workflows, and boosting productivity. They also identified bugs in the system, such as issues with data input prompts, which were communicated to the developers and resolved quickly. ???? Stronger collaboration: Government coordination was clearly demonstrated throughout the assessment, with active engagement from the Ghana Health Service ensuring alignment with national health priorities. Support from regional and district health authorities underscored the government's commitment to scaling the system and addressing challenges. ?? Challenges identified: Limited tablet availability and unreliable network connectivity continue to pose challenges. Despite these hurdles, health workers are committed to finding innovative solutions. For example, while the child health module does have offline functionality, health workers transport tablets to areas with better network coverage to sync data, ensuring that data are updated even in the face of unreliable connectivity at health facilities. This visit highlighted the power and importance of creating user feedback loops to identify, understand, and address challenges in real time. By working closely with health workers, we can better ensure that technology is tailored to meet their needs and drive better outcomes for children and families. ??
