Brrr! Tomorrow might be the first official day of Spring, but some of the Omaha District is getting another round of winter weather today. If you're stuck inside, fly along with us over a gorgeous frosty morning at the Fort Peck Spillway (video from March 2024).
The spillway was an impressive engineering feat for it’s time - located in northeast Montana, the structure is a 5,030-foot-long, trapezoidal concrete channel built circa 1934-1938. Some interesting facts:
? Water is released through the powerhouse to generate power and balance reservoir levels
? Water is also released through the spillway gates when flood risks are high
? The spillway is capable of discharging a quarter million cubic feet per second of flood water
? Was infamously used in the past for bowling tournaments by engineers, on rare days when it was closed and empty
Have you ever visited the Fort Peck Dam & Lake in Montana before? Make plans today for a Spring or Summer visit - once it finally warms up!
