At Columbia Business School, we are deeply invested in #AI through our research, curriculum, and teaching tools, making the Manhattanville campus an ideal hub for interdisciplinary dialogue. That’s why I was especially excited that CBS participated in several events earlier this week as part of Columbia University’s first-ever AI Summit. On the Morningside Campus, CBS Professor Joseph Stiglitz presented his expertise on the “Will Machines Have Free Will? Shaping the Future of AI” panel. There, alongside other Columbia experts, he provided insight into the ability for AI-based models to process free will, as well as the ethical and societal implications of governing AI’s place in our shared future. On the Manhattanville Campus, the Lee C. Bollinger Forum kicked things off with “AI and Creativity,” a session that explored how AI is reshaping the creative process in innovation, art, and architecture. Speakers—including CBS Professor Sheena Iyengar—discussed how AI could enhance human expression while also addressing its ethical and technical challenges. Sheena shared how she has used generative AI to enhance the teaching of her Think Bigger methodology. Afterward, the Forum hosted “ChatCEO: How AI is Influencing Leadership and Labor,” examining how business leaders have leveraged AI to drive strategic vision, streamline operations, and enhance global competitiveness. The panel featured valuable insights from CBS Professors Stephan Meier and Andrea Prat alongside other experts from across Columbia. CBS also hosted a satellite workshop, “AI in Business: Cutting-Edge Research and Real-World Impact,” which examined how AI is transforming the way businesses operate, compete, and innovate. There, we heard from CBS Vice Dean for Research, Professor Oded Netzer; Columbia Engineering Professor Lydia Chilton; and CBS Professors Stephan Meier, Olivier Toubia, and Tianyi Peng. Their discussion highlighted the need for rigorous testing, standardized benchmarks, and careful design considerations when using AI to simulate human behavior and personas. And, as part of CBS’s Distinguished Speaker Series, we welcomed Donna Morris, Executive Vice President and Chief People Officer at Walmart, who leads people strategy for one of the world’s largest employers. Professor Meier moderated a discussion with Donna on the future of work, leadership, and the role of technology—particularly generative AI—in enhancing the experiences of both customers and employees. If you are a leader incorporating AI into your strategy and have insights to share, I encourage you to continue the conversation as we build on these discussions. #ColumbiaAI
